    My New Car

I have just uploaded some pictures of my new M3.

These are the pictures I was sent before I went to view the car. The quality is not to good but I will post some more when I have finished waxing / cleaning it and can get my hands on a digital camera.

    Hope you like it.

It's the SMG shift setup... no-go for the US I'm afraid...

Forgive my lack of info but what exactly is SMG 1? I assume it's an f1-style tranny like SMG II, but I was under the impression SMG II was the first BMW tranny to provide true F1 style, clutchless shifting. Anyone have more info?

SMG stands for "Sequential Manual Gearbox" which is effectively a manual gearbox with an automatic clutch (no clutch pedal).

BMW were the first to implement a true sequential manual on a road car in the e36 M3 but the US never got that option (they got the auto which was a "replacement" not available elsewhere).

The paddles on the steering wheel are simple a shift option to supplement the mid-cabin shifter.

I don't know why American's persistently refer to it as SMGII (it is SMG v2 but the whole II bit is superfluous). I can't help but think it's the same reason they call the Porsche Turbo (996T) the Porsche twin turbo or 996tt... an unnecessary and inefficient statement of the obvious...

SMG seems to have raised a few questions so I have started a separate thread.

m3an.....here in the states, all the window stickers on smg equipped e46's, the sticker says SMGII. which is what bmw, or dealerships are calling the SMG v2

That's a reasonable excuse then... but it's still superfluous IMO. Does the official BMW marking guff say SMGII... it doesn't over here, just SMG...
