Do you have snow tires? How did the car seem to handle in the snow?

I bet the WRX had a lot of fun.

link didn't work.. but yeah.. how was it? looks like it had to be fun.. really it would be a smart thing for everyone to do that off roads and stuff to see how the M3 reacts when jolted etc in the snow.. makes alot of sense to me.. u learn the most by doing it..

i have all season tires on right now. My car handles pretty good in the snow, not as bad as some people make it seem (i dont m3s are that horrible in snow). the m3 had fun whipping it around the corners. It was fun to steer hard one way and then turn the other direction to counterturn and regain control, good practice.

The WRX had a blast! His car is at about 340hp (crank or wheels?) because of an upgraded turbo, ECU, Intercooler (larger topmount), bigger injectors, and a totally free flowing exhaust (I doubt it even has a muffler, i can hear him like 2 miles away -- not to mention it smells like crap when your behind him). he kept opening his hood and putting snow of his intercooler to cool it down. I would have had a blast in any car there - it was a lot of fun and good practice.

Any car will summer performance tires on it, which is what most M3's run will have a tough time in the snow. Maybe your all-seasons helped a bit.

If you are going again, check out the braking distances even with the ABS kicking in. Increase that distance by at least 30% if you have summer performance tires on.

i bought Blizzak Winter tires, and i love them, it handles and grips in the snow like my sisters A4 Quattro

The local club had an ice gymkana on Georgetown Lake (Colorado) yesterday. I took my M3 with summer tires. I just wanted to see how it would do. Everyone else had winter tires or studded tires. Here's a rough comparison of times for the different setups.

I ran the course in 145 seconds.

Most winter tires ran it in 120 to 140 depending on the driver.

Studded tires were running around 105 to 115.

Best time for the day was a jetta at 105.

Traction when starting out was the biggest problem for me, I don't think the winter tires had a big advantage cornering or braking (ABS is the biggest neutralizer).

The course was basically ice. In snow over an inch deep, I think the snow tires would provide the biggest benefit over summer tires in terms of getting the car to move from a standstill.

After that experience, there is no way I'd try to drive on fresh snow with summer tires.

Yeah my Pirelli Rosso's don't work very well in the snow. Being from Ma I am used to the snow. I think the M3 is worse than my 99 Mustang GT with Blizzaks by a safe margin, but with some snows I think the M3 would be halfway decent. I have a $1,000 deductible so I try to stay in or take someone's SUV.
