My friend got a low coolant warning light...

My friend has a 2003 325xi and he got a low coolant warning light. He's only owned the car for like 7 months now.

He is trying to tell me that this is normal...he lives in Jersey, not Death Valley.

    This is weird right?

I am from Boston and when it was in the single digits for a few straight days the low coolant warning would go on when I first started the car up in the morning and then would go away.

...strange you mentioned that...I got the same "low coolant level" warning every few days...I checked the coolant level and it appeared normal.. WTF???...anyway, I'm thinking that it could be a temperamental sensor?? ...the temp gauge isn't going off the chart or anything...

...what the hell?...anyone have any suggestions/comments/previous experience with this?

My M3 was just serviced. I told them that the "low coolant level" was coming on. Even though it had just gotten cold here, they did a pressure test and found the plastic thermostat housing leaking. It was replaced with an aluminum housing. They said a thimble full can trigger that light, but they pressure check anyway.

The car should be as cold as it gets when you check the coolant level. It's a thermal contraction thing.

Low coolant level means your radiator reserve has low coolant. So fill that bad boy up. The warning won't stay on, it will go off after the car is started and it will go back on once you shut the car off. I had a problem where there were two leaking hoses, the big ones, that needed to be replaced... especially because they finally blew up after two things of antifreeze. Be careful with the coolant levels, the car does not check to see if the coolant has gone down during driving. Only at start and shutdown. So fill up that radiator fluid or prepare to have your fine automobile overheat.

agreed. Mine has come on twice so far but it was clear that it was low. I have not been able to find the leak myself but I assume it is one of the hoses. Wish I wouldn't have missed that GB on radiators at bf.c

I had the same problem... except it came on and off once a while... It doesn't happen everytime before i start the car, i get it almost once a month and it jus disappears for a while. Checked my coolant level and it was normal, added more water to it. Any real facts out there guys?

Same problem here, but only when it got real cold out. I hate Wisconsin
