How hurt is my car ?

My mother was driving my M3 going about 65 in 4th then when she shifted to 3rd but instad of carefully rev matching it she just let the clutch fly back up. The engine roared and made this angry sound...

ohow bad is it ? or does it not matter

    thanks for any help

well its not good to do that.. but if she did it in third ur ok.. third will take to 90 or so mph.. it might have messed the clutch a tad.. but i would figure the engine would be fine..

don't think it was overrevved in third-often hit 85-90 in third at the track-the killer is a miss on the way down from fifth to fourth and you hit second by mistake--automatic blown engine then--check out UUC site for shift technique video to help avoid banging into the wrong slot-you were lucky this time--btw-the engine makes some wild growls at max revs--even better with a cold air intake!!!!

thanks for the peace of mind.

Also, how bad is it to start the car from 2nd gear ?

Talking to a bud of mine ( dont think he knows much) I was saying how i had trouble with the 1st to 2nd shift, where i just loose all acceleration and a pinto can take me off the line. ( i'm new at manual)

He said to just start the car in second, that way i can accelerate without the tricky 1st to 2nd.

I still belive in pratice till perfect the 1st to 2nd shift.

Dude - What's up with you sig?

As far as starting from second, you are going to burn up your clutch. IMHO, if you don't know how to drive a manual transmission car, you don't need to be driving a 5-spd M3. Get a Honda or something to learn on before you go off and destroy your car.

i don't think you have anything to worry about.. I've had my car a lot faster than 65 in 3rd

as for the other question.. why not just learn how to drive the car correctly instead of trying all these other techniques to lug the engine or burn up the clutch?

if you can't drive stick well... rent a car for a weekend and learn on that...that way if you burn up the rental cars clutch.. who cares.. heh... if you burn up your own, scratch gears, mis-shift, etc.. it'll cost more than the money spent on the weekend rental for parts and install...

I have all these people that think they know how to drive a manual and throw in there confusing 2 cents. For a newb its all confusing.

But yeah on the record i've been driving it like i was first instructed by my learners permit teacher ( 3 years ago ) and from what i can gather from the forums. So far i'm babying my car. Since i put almost every last cent into it.

AH, my sig...thats part of a song written by steven lynch. He is a comedian song writer. He has some funny stuff. He had one about the speical olympics but i figured that may offend. so I didn't use it.

don't listen to these guys telling to learn to drive a stick on a different car

you bought the dam car, so drive the dam car, even if ure learning, thats the best way, my friend bought a wrx manual and drove it off the lot without ever driving a stick, thats how you learn!

jesus christ guys these cars arent made of glass (at least not the engine and driveline)

yeah, don't listen to these people... I learned to drive on the m3. I didn't have any sticks prior to that, and when we bought the vette, I had to take the lesser of the two evils (the clutch in the m3 has been bad for more than a year, best time to learn imho!)

Dude the car is fine. . . let me tell you what I did once. I was 16 years old and my cousin just bought a brand new NSX-T. . . oh baby was it fun. Anyway, he lets me take it for a ride. I'm in 6th gear doing about 65, and he tells me to downshift to 3rd and mash it. Well not being the greatest at downshifting/rev matching at that time, i put it into 3rd and let out the clutch too slowly while mashing the gas. . . oh man the clutch slipped like crazy and white smoked bellowed out from behind the car. . . after seeing that, i got right off the clutch and shifted back into 6th. I was soo scared, but my cousin was really cool about it. He said that I merely "christened" the clutch, and doing that very rarely wont hurt it. Just make sure mom doesnt make this an everyday occurance.

well I haven't replaced the clutch on the M3.. but I can imagine its not going to be cheap... and probably cost more than on my previous japanese car...

pretty much my whole group of friends in HS learned to drive stick on this POS 1990 Corolla that one of my friends got as a passdown for free... he didn't care about it since he was going to buy somethng else after HS and let us all "learn" on it, by the time we were done w/ it it slipped like crazy.. and this was not from trying to do burn outs or any exhibition of speed (in a no power corolla sedan yeah right)... just from us trying to learn and get the hang of it...

by the time I got my brand new gsr I knew how to drive manual and probably saved a lot of wear on the clutch and components... this car went about 80K until it needed a clutch replacement.. had I tried learning to drive stick on the brand new GSR I probably would have needed the $500 clutch job a lot sooner than 80K... which is why I suggested wearing out "someone elses" clutch heh... it certainly won't kill the car to learn on it but it'll put more wear on its components until you get the hang of it...

You are going to need a clutch soon.

Do not start the car in 2nd.

Your Mom damaged the clutch a little but should be OK.

Do not "baby" shift this car...drive it aggressively but correctly and you will have no problems...I have never needed to replace a clutch/engine/transmission and I drive hard!
