ASC and ABS light warning light on

    Hi everyone,

started my 98 M3 4dr this morning. Drove it less than 1 mile, and both the ASC and ABS warning light came on.

I drove the car around town, samething happens everytime. Lights off when I start the car, but comes on after a mile or so.

    Anyone experienced this problem?

    Thanks.

I don't know how the BMW diagnostic system works...but my ABS failed in my prelude randomly and the light would wait about 1 minute before coming on.

Did you test to see if they actually work or not?

Check your fuses first because that's pretty easy and painless-they are labeled and very large.

If nothing is wrong there just go on the streets and try to set off ASC and ABS. It's not too hard in this car.

        Good luck.

I had this same thing happen to me, and it was the Brake Pedal Position Sensor (or something similarly named) that needed replacing. This will throw a code on the MODIC, so it will be easily identified at the dealer if this is the problem.

Mine does it all the time randomly when it's cold outside. I scanned my ECU and no code came up. It's been like this for 2 years now. I can't seem to figure it out.

Check your wheel speed sensors. A bad one will throw up both lights.

Both systems require the wheel speed sensors to determin if theres slip or lockup.

If you have access to a MODIC, you can do a live test of the speed sensors while you read out your fault codes.

I liked the time I was test driving an E46 at work, and the abs would keep kicking in on dry pavement, under very light braking, after about 30 seconds of that, the ABS, DCS and BRAKE light came on.

Took it back to the shop, turned out to be the steering angle sensor was so outa wack (car was wrecked before), the car was under the impression I was doing barrel rolls down the street, and was trying to stop that :P

I'm getting the same thing...what is a MODIC? Does it tell you which wheel specifically is triggering the problem?

How expensive are the sensors to replace??

                  Thanks!

The MODIC is the computer BMW uses to hook into the car and give specfics on the fault codes. Its a complicated system, designed to hook to every modern bmw out there.

You can also use it to test fuctions on the car, such as rolling up the windows, activating one fule injector, starting the aux pump.. etc.

Think of it as a ODB scanner on major steroids.

sounds like wheel speed sensor, I had one go bad on my E46 and the same lights were on. Try and see if your ASC is working or not Mine was not, as I found out when the rear got away from me...

Safe to say my Peake Research Tool can't get the fault codes for ABS related issues...can the MODIC identify the specific sensor that is failing?

only after a dyno run. the OBD got confused or something (since only the rears were spinning). it dissapeared the next day.

I just got a quote for $108 (1 hr work)...for a local BMW shop to scan the car...they say they have a newer system than the MODIC.

Seems a little high....what do you guys think?

Asked him how much a sensor costs and he said off the top of his head $200...he didn't think it was a sensor though...

There is no newer system. The MoDic is the smaller version of BMW's DIS system. You can put the modic in your lap... Which does the exact same thing... but the modic is a bit less advanced.
