    M3 top speed (gearing limited)

what would be the top speed for an e36 M3, gearing limited, not governed....

    #2
my buddy got it up to 152 with me in it and i believe he was a small to mid 6k on the tach so i would guess that with a 315 it would be around 160...

if your redlining at 7,000 rpm it will top out at 156 mph.

My stock 95 made it to 144mph at 6500rpm.

Gears should take you to 172. BUt you guys are missing 90 hp aren't you in the US...

our 5 speed gears will only hit 156 mph at 7000 rpm... sadly thats the cards we are delt... Who really needs it to go faster than that anyways? My enjoyment is the handling and the accelleration... after a certain speed its not fun to drive anymore... Where the hell would I do above 155mph?... (if anyone knows a place in the US on the East coast that has a test track... baby I'm there hehehe)

Except for the fact that you can never hit those speeds anywhere in the state, Ok maybe out in the middle of the desert. But, my adrenaline would be peaking worried about the cop that might be hiding off the side of the road more than hitting 180. Lets face it, the fun of the M3 is the acceleration and handling, and the stick has it in acceleration. I don't think I would ever hit over 150, and if I did it would probably just once for bragging rights. I figure the concequences of making a mistake at those speeds are too great.

yeah i totally agree, me and my friend hit 160 once in my car in the middle of no where just to do it and thats it, i dont think i ever want to take another risk doing that.. but its just nice knowing that even though my m3 is auto with a few mods can do 160 in no time at all... being at 51-5200 rpms

I have to call you on that one...I do not believe even a moderately modified M3 will do 160mph...much less @ 5200rpm.

You will be aerodynamically limited to 150 w/only 250hp. I am not talking from experience but does anyone have the road test for the US-spec auto M3.

If I am wrong I will admit it...

My goal is to hit 150mph with the top down:thumbsup:

i got it on video, if u tell me how to host it u'll be more than happy to prove u wrong.. as far as mods i got CAI, UUC TSE, stage 2 software, and tranny chip.. thats all, and u are totally wrong about aerodyanmical limitation.. if u look into auto gearing you will see that at 160mph u are only at 5200 rpms.. i have the car, i know, we took it that fast, and i am talking from experience.. but i dont want this to turn into an arguement.. if u dont believe me its ok and its not even a bid deal.. i'm not planning to do that again any time soon and put my self and other people at risk..

95 M3's and 96-99's still have about the same top speed, 155 mph limited by gearing. Even though the 95's have a 3.15 diff and the 96-99's have a 3.23, the gearing is about the same due to the bigger rear tires of the 96-99. So they both have about the same top speed. The difference in the diff is canceled out by the bigger tires.

The automatic M3's as imports4ever858 can go faster than the manuals can. the 95 automatic M3's have a 3.23 diff and the 96-99's have a 3.38, but different gearing than the manual. I do believe Imports4ever858 that he hit over 160 mph, cause it is possible on the automatic.

I believe your speedo said 160 man, but isn't the correction factor ridiculous at that speed? That might "only" translate into like 145-150 or something.

The E46 M3 guys are always talking about it...anyone know?

i have a 94 euro m3 and have had the speedo reading between 165mph and 170mph more than once.

because the 3.0L euro m3s were never limited...
