    burning smell...need oil change?

it's been about 5k miles since my last oil change. and i got the synthetic oil change which (at least the mech told me) is good for 6k miles. should i just change it or could the smell be something else? i was planning on just changing it myself this time since i paid close to $100 the last time. and with the help of this forum, i found instructions on how to do it and feel like an idiot for paying someone $100 to do it. i'm just debating on whether i should change it this weekend or not. i don't drive it much so it doesn't really bother me. i just got my foglights and went to take her for spin (i haven't driven her for 3 days) and that's when i smelled the burning. at first i thought it was the foglights because when i felt them, the lens was really really hot (i'm using 55w h1 bulbs). but when i popped the hood, i traced the smell to the engine. i know i need a change soon so i'm pretty convinced the smell is due to the oil. i'm just wondering, do you smell something burning when it's about time to get an oil change? i have 4 green bars left and the oil light has not come on.

Did you check to see if you're low on oil?

These things just eat oil, so you might be a quart or so short!

also, i know this might sound kinda weird but you never know. Check if you don't have anything on the bottom stuck like a plastic bag or sumfin. I spend a lot of time trying to figure out what was burning and added oil (which was needed so check oil also) and the coolant. It ended up being a bag being burnt, a bag stuck to the bottom of the car, melted.

i doubt a burning smell could be related to the need for an oil change. if it smells like burning oil, you probably have a leak somewhere. if you get blue-ish smoke coming out of your tailpipe, then you are burning oil internally and that is a different problem.
