255s in back on stock rims?

I have searched through the past threads on tire sizing, and am still a little unclear on whether or not 255/40/17s will fit on the rear stock rims (97 Coupe) without any rubbing or need to "roll" the fenders (not sure what exactly that entails). Seems like some people said they will rub, while most seemed to think the 255s fit fine?

I'd like to buy a set of 4 on TR.com, but they are out of the 245/40/17s in the tire I want...so I was thinking of going with the 255/40/17s, which I assume will look more bad-ass and give me better performance?

For the fronts I was just going to stick with the recommended 225/45/17s since they are in stock.

    Thoughts?

Why such a stagger? 235/40 fronts and 235/40 or 245/40 rears will be a much better setup. But if you want the look, a 255/40 will fit in the rear. I shouldn't rub with stock suspension, but be prepared to roll anyways.

If you do the 255 rear, atleast upgrade your front tire to a 235/40.

Yeah, I was wondering if the 255/225 combo would be to much of a stagger...but I really don't know much about this stuff! Could that cause performance problems or would it just look funny...or both?

235/40 all around would be good because of the rotation factor...but are 235/40s in the rear as good perf wise as 245/40s?

What do you guys think is the best overall setup, all things considered (without changing the stock rims)?

      225/45 F & 245/40 R (stock)

      235/40 F & R

      235/40 F & 245/40 R

      235/40 F & 255/40 R

Bigger the stagger the more understeer you will have.

I run 235/40's with 245/40's and I still with it would understeer less but that won't happen with out different wheels.

I run the same setup and have no complaints - if you play with tire pressure and suspension you can dial out the understeer. Its probably good to have some dialed in though - a little safer. Or just get on the gas a little more in the turn and bring the back end on around some

            Ok thanks guys...

I'm looking to get the Good Year GS-D3s...but can't seem to find them in a 245/40/17...anybody know where to get them? TR.com has them on Back Order.

Any comments in general on the Good Years?

            Thanks!

I JUST PUT YOKO AVS SPORT 235/40 17'S ALL AROUND, 41 mm offset, h&r sport spings and the rears barely fit inside the fender. looks great from behind though.

I have a 235/255 set up too, and I find it fine. I have a 97 M3 and it had the 225/245 setup before, and my new set up does feel different, but I've gotten used to it already.

It looks hella mean too, if you know what I mean ~_^

The Dunlop SP8000 works great, but a cost of 275 per tire is....well...yeah you get the point.

                  Meester,

when you say "feels different", how do you mean? can you describe it?

do you have the stock 17" wheels? do the rears rub at all?

                    Isn't the front suppose to be a 225/(45), not a 40?

that is the stock 96+ tire size, but you can easily put a 235/40 on the wheel. That was the oem tire size for the 95 m3.

I don't understand the purpose of putting staggered tires and a car that already is setup to understeer.

My car with -3 degrees camber, GC track/school kit, uuc sways, still pushes with 235/245's on.

Doh! Yeah its a 235/45, I better fix my sig too -_-

My rims are 17", and it doesn't rub the well.

It feels different because my tires stick to the road better. Maybe because I had the Sumitomo's before I installed the Dunlops (rear), but it def. grips better.

You will NEVER get a Goodyear F1 GS D3 255 on the rears w/o rubbing. My car has the H&R/Koni setup and BARELY fit the 245's. These tires are WIDE as hell. In an S03 or other tires...no problem, but the D3's are much wider. My friend just got an RE750 in 245 and it is NARROWER than my 225 D3's! Go figure?
