Finally, my RTAB's or RSM's failed!

Well, I've been waiting for this day...and I'm kind of glad it came. It's annoying knowing that these things should have failed at 50k and they're still okay.

Now, if I drive over slightly uneven ground, there is this funny rattling sound coming from the driver's side rear of the car.

My warranty said that they would cover this, so I'm off to the dealer pretty soon.

What do you guys think it is?

If I hit big potholes, the front and the rear respond the same and there are no funny sounds or clunks. It is only uneven surfaces.

    I'm thinking RTAB's, but I'm no mechanic.

rear shock mounts. RTABs aren't known to make noise when bad.

tell your mechanic to closely inspect the shock towers for any signs of cracking.

Astan, how many miles do you have on your car now? I'm at ~57k and I've been thinking about replacing my RSMs

Yeah I know what you mean. I wish that my shocks, brakes, and clutch would just go right now so I wouldn't have to wait to pay for them

Cool, RSM's then. I have 62k on the car.

HEre's the thing custom. Imagine you have a warranty that will cover anything for a 100 dollar deductible. I hear any stupid little rattle and instantly assume that something has failed in my car. I know that the RSM's and RTAB's are prone to go anytime, so I keep just waiting and waiting and getting freaked out.

At least now I know that it'll be fixed and I can move on with my life and I don't have to worry about it as much.

I definitely don't want my clutch to go though...that's a lot of cash. 100 bucks isn't going to break the bank and the peace of mind it adds is well worth it.

            Quick side question,

would it be any cheaper if I just asked them to do my RTAB's now also?

Where are both of these things located?

            Can I save on labor?

The rtabs are where the trailing arm connects to the body. The rsm is at the top of the rear shock, and requires removal of the trunk carpet to access it.

You can easily do the rsm's, its very easy. The rtabs are more difficult, you will need either the bmw removal/install tool or do like i did and destroy the bushing enough to get it out. Then make your own press.

IF I do it myself, will it cost less than 100 bucks?

I'll go read the summary somewhere. I'm sure logun.org or understeer or someone will have a writeup.

With stock rsm yes. I have upgraded Ground Control RSM's and they are 79 or 89. But come with a lifetime warrenty.

79 each? By the way, you seem really knowledable...glad to have you on the forums man!

I might upgrade just so I don't have to worry about this anymore. I really hate wondering if something is going to break soon like that.
