    Carmax dosn't know its stuff....

Carmax says that no modifications has been done to this car... What do YOU think??

Looks like clear side markers to me!

But you could not be more correct -- don't expect them to know much at all. Check the thread below for my thoughts, you can make this work for you.

If there is a local BMW dealer you are on good terms with or can convince to run VIN for you, they can access vehicle history. But don't think they're supposed to do this, privacy issues.

Nice... this is the respsonce I get from them.

Thank you for clearing that up for me. Were you interested in transferring one of the two vehicles? If so please contact me and I can walk you through the process.

IE, they don't give a damn. If the car had been modded with clear markers, what else was done?? I know I can't ask the Carmax yahoos... they have no clue.

It isn't really FAIR to expect them to know everything. They deal in Daewoo, to Kia, to Mercedes, to BMW.

Not every sales guy can know every little silly thing about a car. Clear markers hardly even count as a mod.

I wouldn't sweat it. Tell them that you'll pay to transfer it if there are NOT ANY mods other than the clear corners and if they're wrong, they pay for the transfer...only if you're serious of course.

        Get it in writing.

They probably would notice an exhaust or an intake or something, but something subtle...it's okay.

Save yourself a lot of frustration -- they will not negotiate in anyway. It's not their business model. Hell, I couldn't even get the Texas salesperson to take another pic of car for me, had to go off the one lousy, long distance pic. (I got friend of friend to look at car, however).

Transfer or not, that's all they'll want to know. And the price is set, although if you buy $150 is credited to the purchase price.

Have it inspected right away by someone who knows Bimmers after you buy, only way to know. You do have the 5 day period to return for any reason.

You can lurk for a while and see if the price goes down.

Yeah, it's funny. M3's don't move too quickly, so they will eventually lower the price trying to move it.

I told them that, and they denied it. They're like, we're non-negotiable. I said, well listen, the past two M3's haven't sold in over 2 months, what makes you think that this new one is going to any sooner?

Just lower the price 1-2k NOW and maybe I'll buy it. You're going to do it anyway.

They didn't like my flippant attitude.

Edgy got a killer deal though on his 99!

Sometimes they really don't know the value of things or the car is in a remote area, so you might get a killer deal.

Where did you see this silver M3? I just did an M3 search and it doesn't show up. In fact, only one E36 M3 right now in Carmax inventory, Daker manual in Florida.

Astan -- I think if after two or at most three price drops the vehicle doesn't sell, they ship to different region. Not sure though.

Every region is different. In my case I did my homework and got a little lucky, was shopping at the right time of year.

Took a chance that in the Dallas TX area folks want the newest/biggest/most powerful, not a 99 car, no matter how beautiful or low the miles. Even then, I didn't wait until it became a "Last Chance", maybe could have saved another $500, but also could have lost her.

Currently trying to help my girlfriend with Carmax, so all this is top of mind.

Full disclosure -- she's at a body shop right now. Earlier this month she was stolen :banghead: , I was in state of shock. But cops recovered her, and damage is relatively minor. I'm going back and forth with insurance, but clear I'll get a new hood, front fender, and maybe more out of it. Just so happy to have her back.

Will do full post with all details when all worked out, but didn't want you dudes to think I was holding out.
