    M3 buying advice

Hello, I'm new to this board in anticipation of owning an M3, however, the powers that be suggest that I look a little further before I buy the current M3 that I'm looking at.

It's a 96 with 94000 miles on it. It has the luxury package and has been relatively well maintained, mostly garage kept. It's in pretty good condition from my point of view, however, it does have some things wrong with it. It was driven in Arizona, and it has a little sand damage where the sand has almost sandblasted the car on some of the leading surfaces, however, it's not noticeable unless to the touch. It has one tire that is a bit worn, and the leather seats on the inside have a little bit of wear. The car is mechanically sound except that it will eventually in about 15k miles need 2 rear struts. Other than what's mentioned above, the car seems to be in great shape, runs well, drives well, everything that I can tell seems to be fine with it.

I blue-booked the car on kbb.com and with the options I checked it comes out to a private party value of about 13k. However, I see no 96 M3's within 300 miles of me that look as good or are as in good shape as this car for no less than 15k. The price the guy is asking for it is 17k, but this is negotiable. The powers that be, however, think that its majorly overpriced due to the fact that kelly blue book says it should be worth about 13k. My personal opinion as of late is that the way the value of the car is generated on kbb.com is BS, due to the fact that it doesn't really take into consideration location (I live in South Carolina, and I don't see too many M3s around here). I'd really like this car, and I can afford it, however, I'm still looking for a second opinion, and I thought you guys could help. Feel free to ask more questions, and I'll try to provide you with the best answers I can.

I am in the same situation excpet for I live in CA where there are so many it is ridiculous. Plus, the asking price on average is about 13K to 14.5K. Don't pay 17K. Plus, is it still basically stock? Lots of suped up M3's exist around here and because of hteir modifications they are less expensive, somewhere around 12K. On average they have between 78K-102K miles for either a '95 to a '97. I have been test driving lately and the favorite so far is the '97 with 97K miles and 18's. Overall, it's perfect and the guy is asking $13.5K. Bumping stereo as a bonus.

I have looked for about 3 months before I located my 98 M3. Yes, there are cheaper ones out there but you have to be careful about the mileage and condition. Any cars close to 100K needs a lot of maintenance - timing belts, clutch, struts...etc. IMO, I would look for a lower mileage M3 and pay a little more, unless you are mechanically inclined and do most the work yourself, then it would be good to save a bunch of $ by doing it yourself.

A competent BMW mechanic is your best bet.

      My $0.02.

PS. If only one tire looks funny, you may have a front end problem. Make sure that it has not been in accidents before. Sometimes Carfax don't even know if the owner repaired it himself to save on insurance escalation.

Well, I looked at another one today, a 95 in Georgia that has 94k miles, however, it has a brand new engine in it, brand new clutch, brand new tires, brand new front rotors, and a brand new radiator. The new engine has a 60k mile warranty, and it's a pretty nice lookin car. The guy is askin 13.9k for it, and I'm thinkin about it seriously. It seems to be the best I have found so far.
