    You crazy sob's....

ok i KNOW one of you crazy sob's has dreamed of putting one of those beautiful german m5 v8's into one of our lil m3's. i know it CAN be done, i just want to hear some stories of when it WAS done.

the only problem i would have with doing it is that it would really throw off the weight distribution.. but damn it would be sweet.. 400 at the crank stock.. oooooooo.. it would be a bullet.. even the older M5 6 would be nice

Get an E28 M5 6 in there, that would be awesome, prob not toooooooo expensive, at least not like an E39 M5 engine would be.

Yes, I dream of it EVERY day. Actually the e39 M5 engines arn't any more than a euro e36 M3 engine

but the potential for the v8 would go FAR beyond that of the i6

no doubt. since we are on the subject let me ask some questions to get some things clarified...

The M5 engine is just a beefed up 540i engine, correct?

When alpine puts a 540 engine in the e36, do you know if they have to remove anything like a/c, power steering or what not to make it fit?

The M5 engine is hand-built much the same as the Euro M3. They're hand finished to pretty specific tolerances.

Yes, it's a "beefed up" 540 in much the same way a Euro is a beefed up 328...

Right, I knew they aren't just slapped together modded 540 engines.. but I was just wondering if it was the same plateform.. or more importantly, the same dimensions.

The costs associated with putting a BMW V8 in an e36, that I have seen, are on the order of 20000$. For less than half of that you could put an LS1 motor in that is within 60 lbs of a S52! With MUCH more HP (and much less expensive HP) potential.

                    Heresy?...not to me.

No doubt it wouldn't be cheap but it can't cost much more than 10k in parts, could it? As for the LS1, I believe they only put out 320 stock, yes you can upgrade them for cheap, but it's still no BMW. I guess my logic is a little vague here. Why not an LS6 motor? And what ever happened to that e36 LS1 project? I still dont think throwing an LS1 engine in would be a whole lot cheaper

Yeah Ive seen that as well, but the m3 engine, with some slight modifications can handle plenty boost, no need to waste your time with throwing in another engine

best bet, go on the net to one of those sites that deals in junked up super cars. find a dead m5 with good engin/tranny. cant be more than 4 g's out of a junker. and if i want an ls1....first i'd shoot myself for ever wanting a chevy....then i would go buy a comero.

Hartge offers 5.0L engine swaps to pretty much any bmw.

in fact, they were working on a 5.0L for the mini, but it looks as if they gave that up.
