Ive seen people with their front grills colored to match their paint job. How do they do that? I have a 99 cosmos black and im interested in somehow buying one or if possible painting the existing chrome around the grill to be black using touch up paint, is that a good idea? If anybody has performed this operation and can share some wisdom please do!

Well you can use your existing grill that you have on the car right now...just pop them off. and follow these steps on this site http://www.bmw-m.net/TechProc/grill.htm
Or you could always buy the hamann black out kidney kit for like $80. If you want them painted i dont know of a pre painted kit but you can just bring them to the body shop and get them painted.

After seeing that link, I decided to go out today to get all the stuff needed to complete the task of painting my grill flat black. I followed the instructions closely, and so far I'm happy with the results. It's currently drying in my garage, haven't installed them yet. I had a crack on the right grill because some idiot backed up into me a few months back, and the black covered it up pretty well (the primer helped).
My advice to you guys that want to do this: Spend the time to do it right. I've spent about 1 1/2 hrs on this just to get it right. It was also pretty cold, which isn't the best time to do it. I'd wait for a sunny day if you wanna do it ^_^
Pictures soon!

The pictures don't do it any justice, you gotta see it to get a feel of the quality. It feels just like the front lip/splitters! You can compare it to the picture in my sig ^_^ Yeah, the crack on my right grill surround is ticking me off >_>
