    Lubricating Window Rubber

    Hi -

My window has started to make an awful sound when I raised a lower the window. I need to lubricate the rubber weather striping I believe. Can I use something as common as Vaseline or should I use something specially made for this?

go to the dealer and they have this stuff, gummefledge. It works great, it will cure your squeeks.

You probably have some sap or something on the trim... Once in my corolla I had that problem... I took the trim out and got a card.. wraped a towel around it and dipped it into paint thinner... and then massaged in the seal... it did the trick.

it's possible it's dirty, but I'd say you probably do need to lube it...

having owned a few convertibles, I can tell you not to waste your money on expensive stuff from car dealers (unless this gummefledge is super cheap? doubt it...)

use silicone spray, put it on a cloth and wipe it on. You should do this as winter prep too, to keep the doors from sticking. The silicone spray seems to be great at 'moisturing' it too - so it will help prevent cracking in the future. I've also used petroleum jelly - it also works really well, but doesn't seem to have the same moisturing effect. I usually use it when the rubber is too aged, or when I'm out of the silicone spray. I keep both in my garage... I rubbed vaseline all over the seals of the old Jeep at the first sign of winter, and silicone all over the m3 and the sebring.

if you are looking to restore the black, the silicone spray will help a little, but there are other products that are better for that...

I just apply this with my finger along the rubber seem. I got this free from my buddy but i guess if you goto a gm dealership you can get it there as well. And no I dont drive GM.

yep, napa has something like that too... not very expensive. I just use the spray, 'cause I always have it around (and I like to put it on regularly)

I bought this stuff for my convertible top once from mopar - $38, figured it would be worth it if it was a large can... it was less than an ounce, and arrived almost completely dried out. It's what they recommended in the manual - I made sure the dealership knew not to ever let someone buy that again. : )

Let me know how that works. My window rubbers are doing the same exact thing.

                    Thanks

Not sure how well this stuff moisturizes, but if your black rubber parts are looking grey, I use this stuff called "Black Again" (www.northamericanoil.com) It works really well on the plastic parts around the outside of the car too. It's a pain to get off of glass or the paint, so I apply it with a small paint brush, then wipe it down with a cloth and that seems to work really well.
