    Trouble!!

I just tried to access a link to an old thread off of the FAQ section and since we have moved server you can't access the old stuff anymore.

It appears that the FAQs section will have to be completely reworked.

Do the Mods know about this problem???

Are you sure, all the FAQ threads seemed to open for me? Maybe another non-moderator needs to try.

    Anyone?

I checked and everything seemed okay. Which thread were you specifically clicking. I just clicked 3 and everything was cool.

I don't like how when you click FAQ on top of the page, it takes you to a search instead of the forum.

Now when we tell people to check the FAQ they might click there and get discouaged (you know how n00bs hate searching) instead of seeing all the questions layed out.

i guess I wasn't very clear on that. The problem is not with the getting to the threads, it is when you try to open a link within the threads.

        Example:

The thread entitled "Things to look for when buying a used e36" has links to lots of other threads. When you try to click on these, they won't open.

oh man...that's terrible because half of what made the threads worthwhile is that they had links to lots of other important threads...agreed- trouble.

okay, so the problem is that the links usually contain the IP address of the old forums first...if I go in...and gulp...edit all the links so that the new link has the correct new IP will it fix the problem?

I can't edit anything though because the thread is locked...

Would this even fix the problem though?

it would seem to me that it would. Lots of work, but the Faq's section is kinda useless right now.

hmm it seems that when searching for a word it only finds threads that have been posted since the move, but when searching for a person it shows all their threads

maybe there's a way to get a script to replace all instances of the old IP with the new IP or something like that?

Yea that's exactly what I am trying to do. If anyone knows the mysql command to do this please PM me!

I've gone through and changed the IP on the referenced tread and it seems to be working ok. So as long as we change all IP from the database table, it should be ok...looking into how to do this.

The search is only picking up the threads since the move because I haven't rebuilt the search index. Got overlooked last night so I am waiting til later tonight to rebuild the search index. It's quite server intensive.

                      Thanks guys,

                      Frank

My MySQL stuff is at work, and I haven't touched it in a few months...maybe to a search on the syntax for the MySQL "REPLACE" command...also "REPLACE INTO"

Not sure if this is what we need, I'd have to check out my notes at work and mess around on a database...

Problem exists for all previous posts with the old IP... goes to show the value of using URL's... pitty they never worked properly at this site.

                          Suggestions...

Use UPDATE or REPLACE INTO as described above.

Remove all of the site links (like in the link bar above) that use IP's to prevent future problems and use a registered domain name in their place...

                          :banghead:

Edit: Big upgrade by the way, thanks for the efforts, have to get used to it but there's some cool features. What's a "Reputation" context: this board?
