    simple e36 tuning tricks

just 2 nights ago i was messing around with my buddies 3000gt vr4, we read on his vr4 forum about tricking his boost controller into making some more boost.

There are a few, but it would help a lot of e36 m3 and non-m owners if you post what you know.. if you know of a simple power maker, somthing that we all can work with, or for cheap, then share the wealth of the knowledge.

hopefully some simple tuning tricks can get some of us into tuning on our own and saving some labor cost. good luck guys

putting your car on a weight lost plan. I.e. seats, subs, spare, anything that isn't needed. carpeting. so on and so forth.

I work with a guy who talks all the time about how he "grounded" his car and it now has more hp. I'm told this is a proven technique on many Japanese cars, but I haven't seen any write-ups on it for BMWs.

The grounding thing doesn't make much of a difference on M3s... certian Japanese cares have poor grounds such as RX7s or Mitsubishis.... If you ever look at the ground wires on an RX7 you'll know... it's like the thickness of speakerwire and loosely fastened with a plastic clip. I say for M3s get a drop in K&N filter, exhaust, balanced injectors and a shark program. The weightloss thing is the cheapest way to get faster... but common, you gotta be real serious if you are going to strip out all the interior of a Beamer. It's likely that most people on this forum wouldn't try that. In the club4ag forum tho... I'd say about 40% of the guys have stripped out cars, but we are talking about a 20 year old car that has plastic interior... most of them are already trashed so it's not a hard decision.

Yeah people like to do that on the 350Z/G35. Here is the write-up on Stillen's Grounding Wires:

Description: The Stillen 350Z/G35 Ground Kit is used because there is too much electromagnetic interference for the ECM to operate at peak efficiency. Thus you will produce about 2-4HP gains.

          Nothing like $120 for 2-4hp!

there really aren't any simple tricks for making more power. the upside of having an M3 is that the parts that are available are high quality (for the most part). the downside is that they are pricey and not as effective as mods for some other cars.

Here are some of the cheap and easy things I did with my Nissan. Due to the fact I have only owned my M3 a month now, I am not sure how much of this stuff will work on our cars.

1: Be on top of oil changes and use synthetic oils, Mobil 1 works great for me

2: Go to your local tunning shop and get some of the high tech lubricant stuff to put in with your oil. I can't remember the name of the stuff I used.

3: Use platinum plugs, NGK work great.

4: When you purchase these plugs, ask for plugs that are one heat range cooler than stock.

5: for $7 a bottle or less, put a bottle of Water Wetter from Red Line Oil in with your coolant. Or if you can afford it replace your coolant with it. It lowers engine temps better than coolant alone.

6: I am not sure if this will work on our cars, but if it does, you can advance the timing about 5 degrees. This will lower your cars gas mileage though

7: Some might argue about this with me, but if you don't have an intake, you can drill two one inch diameter holes in your air box below the filter to let more air in since the airbox intake is kind of restrictive. Yes it is hot engine air you are letting in, but you are letting in more air. More air is better.

8: Take some time to learn to drive your car. If you can get a dyno chart of your car, study it, take the time to find the power bands in each gear, so you can shift accordingly.

I might think of more later but this is it for now
