Upgrade to OEM CD Head Unit?

I want to switch my OEM HK tape deck for an OEM CD deck that will still control my changer. Does anyone have any details on this...

    1)What model # I need?

2)What donor cars to get it from (year and model)?

3)Does is work with HK and control the changer?

    4)Any pics?

    TIA,

wouldn't bother.. i would buy an aftermarket HU.. the stock HU's are worthless.. nothing compared to the newest technology.. also if u find one u may be paying the same amount as u would for a new one.. just something to think about.. i matched my interior lighting up with an aftermarket hu and it looks good :rockband:

SG hit the nail on the head. it takes about 10 minutes to do, and the sound is MUCH better (imho). i was ready to go aftermarket until i sat in a phatbox rep's M3 with the CD43. sounded great, and i was sold on the CD43.

here's a bad pic... go to post #7

This Nakamichi head unit produces great sound quality and has matching color light.

            http://www.nakamichi.com/auto/CD700II/index.html

or for a more advanced look but same button feel and German(actually OEM for BMW just as Alpine, Pioneer, and HK) make...

Or try some Harman.....the Becker(OEM for some BMW, Porsche, MB) Monzo series(comes in red also to match the interior light). http://www.becker.de/

Unless you want clicky buttons everywhere and flashy lights of different colors driving you crazy like Kenwood, Alpine and others...

This may be of some use... the E36 section discusses the CD43

Out of these units, I can hook you up with all the Blaunpunkt head units. I do not have access to the prices as of now but I am guessing the series in the links I gave you will run from $200 - $300.

As for Nakamichi head units, I have not seen them online but I would guess the CD400 is $300-$350. The CD700II though, 4 digit prices....Do a search online, take your time shopping.

Becker is difficult to find but I would assume around $450, give or take $100 for the different units.

I will get a picture of my headunit some time next week, because I do not have access to my car until next week. It is the Blaunpunkt Tokyo, all black.

if i remember, i'll try to take a pic of the unit. it's a good looking unit. it sticks out VERY slightly from the dash, compared to stock, but it's very minimal. i believe they also were available in the Z3. essentially, it's the only in-dash CD player that bmw made in a regular din size (they started making over-sized radios in the newer cars).

I have the older version of the Nakamichi HU....pretty close color match and great sound.....Pretty user friendly also!

Dont trust the sound quality of stock.

Supposedly the Range Rover units are the same thing and can be found on E-bay for much cheaper. It just has a different logo on the face.

Maybe, but it won't say "BMW Business CD" on it!!!
