Maybe if we M3/4s weld our rear doors shut, the idle situation will go away

u can actually get the ICV out without taking anthing off the engine (except the intake), it is just a little time comsuming and u have to wrestle with it a little. I did it last weekend in a little under and hour without removing anything except the intake, but it was a pain in the butt. U have to remove it with both hoses still attached b/c there is no way to disconnect them with the intake manifold still on there. It helped my car out a little bit (replaced with a new unit).

Well I have a 95 and took it to Ralph Schomps bmw in Denver for the same problem. And after 2 days of exhaustive research three mechanics finally found out the problem. It was the ground cable between the car and the rear of the engine located towards the bottom of the engine. they tightened it up and no more problems. they said that the changing in power with the lose cable made the ECU freak out and caused the car to die, almost-die, and just some times idle really low. Don't know if this will help being that this is a OBD I car, but who know might just solve your problem.
