    Broken Door Handle?

    Hey guys,

My friends came up to visit me and one of them is apparently very heavy handed. He yanked on my door handles too hard and for awhile, it was impossible to open them from the outside. This was specifically the passenger side door. I would have to unarm the car, hop in, and open the door from the inside.

Somehow, the door fixed itself and it is now openable from the outside again, but it feels really junky and cheap. Like, the mechanism is barely catching and it happens to open correctly.

Anyone know how to fix this or how much it will cost to have the dealer do it?

Happened to my car - took off the passenger side inner door panel and oiled down the clip connector thingy - the clamp that fits over the door hinge to hold it in place while closed (looks like an upside down "U" if you're looking at it) and oiled the part that's behind the door jamb with basic gun oil. Since then, no problems. How long that'll last - can't tell you, but it appeared that there were no broken pieces. Before oiling the parts, I took a vacuum and took out all the dust and particles.

    Hope that helps

      Cool, thanks!

The whole piece feels really loose and junky still though...I'm afraid something is broken but I guess I won't know until I look. I might just wait until I have more time.

Any warranty left on your car? I heard replacing the handle is not easy or fun.

I have an aftermarket one, but they might say that I broke it. it's worth a shot though. Next time I go in for something, I'll have them take a look.

Sounds to me more like a part failure. If the lock mechanism is broken, how could you have caused that. The part did not work as it was supposed to and thus is broken. I.E. Faulty part.

An over revved engine is caused by the driver, so it is not covered. The engine did what it was designed to do. . .go into gear at any speed and break.

I thought maybe one of my friends yanked it too hard and it broke something. I'm not going to say that though. If anyone asks...it's BMW's fault.

                Astan:

It may well be a BMW thing. My passenger side does exactly the same thing, came like that from the previous owner. You pull the door handle, nothing seems to happen, you feel resistance, then door usually pops open, right? That's how mine is.

Thanks to Fus for the description of possible fix. Will try if it gets worse.

my driver side door does this too after it has rained for a few days or so. I just need to re-lubricate the latch mechanism with silicone or a spray lubricant. if you just spray into the door around the latch, you're good. no real need to take the door apart unless soemthing is broken inside.
