    Should O2 sensor be changed

Need some help if someone has info:

My O2 sensor lights comes on. I get it reset but then after a couple of months it comes on again. I am being told that it is because of the intake I put on the car. These are my questions:

    1. Does it affect or cause any damage to the car?

    2. Do I need to change it?

    3. If I do change it, will it go away or will it still come since I have the intake in there?

    Any insight will be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

who the hell told you that, but whoever did is a moron, intake has nothing to do with your 02 sensor.. and what lights are u talking about, m3s have an 02 light that comes on? i didnt even know that, but if it comes on i would change them out, it affects your gas mileage and performance.. change them out.. btw where are the lights located and what do they look like?

          Thanks PurppleM,

I heard that when a check engine light comes on, the car runs in a "safe" mode. This mode runs the engine rich or leans it out, I can't remember. Is there any truth to what I heard?

i believe it depends on a code that it throws, if it's something serious then i think it runs less powerful and if its just something not too important it doesnt do anything..

yes replace the o2, you can DIY. Go to a autozone or a place like that and get them to pull the code. It will tell you which of the 4 o2's is bad, then just replace it.

I just got it checked out and I have to replace all four of them at $146 a pop. M3 is nice and cool to drive but DAMN. Ia m looking at about $600 to replace sensors. A very expensive ride and hobby. I don't even drive the car that much. I put about 2K miles on it a year!

I had a BMW mechanic from a dealership in texas say that they could be cleaned and did not have to be replaced. I think he said a wire wheel would clean the carbon off and it would work like new

                      Any body try this?

I don't think you can clean the o2 sensors to the point they work correctly again. Yes, you may be able to clean the outside shell out, but its the inside works that need.

The o2 sensors work of of chemical reactions, and they can only react for so long.

If your o2 sensor is going bad, its prob done for.

On my Mercedes we took a blow torch to the O2 sensor to clean it off. Works like a champ now. It was corroded and such.. no longer!
