    Locking UP ?

ive recently noticed that when i ve been downshifting from 3rd to 2nd the rear wheels lock up for about a second then start spinning. I was wondering is this supposed to happen??

also when braking hard from about 90mph does anyones car make a loud whining noise like a washing machine ?

i hope my cars not ****ed :???: :???:

Sounds like a wheel bearing, have someone check that out asap.

Wheel bearings, when they start to go bad, make a nice 'whirring' noise. The wheels will tend to lock up from time to time, and sooner or later, it just blows apart heh....

Do you do throttle matched down shifts? Or blip the throttle before you down shift?

Sirius is right... we've both seen what happens when wheel barrings go bad. Mine did the same thing thats happening to you. However, i've also read that when the diff starts to go bad that can happen as well. If i were you i'd start from drive axle and work your way back checking it all out. Sounds like the BB's tho. I drove mine to the last ball and finally the tire just locked up. i'm greatful for Sirius's discount at his bmw shop

Sirius, you are just a wealth of information on the board. It is nice to have someone who works at a BMW dealership as a member.

Cheers guys, i reckon it must be the BB because i have noticed that it does make a sought of whirring noise.

is it an exspensive job to carry out ?

                I do what I can. And when I can't I find out how :P

It can be costly. BMW actually has a special tool for their wheel bearings so you can remove/install them, the tool also doubles as the special tool to pull the half-shafts into place.

It prob costs around $600ish at the dealership.. would have to double check that though, and it depends on where you get it done.

If the sounds comming from the rear, you can double check to make sure its the bearings by using a lift. If you have access to one, get the car onto the lift, put it in gear and have someone rev the car while its in gear. Then stand under the car and listen to the wheels, Itll be a low, whirring sound comming from the wheel hub.

I have come across odd sounds after working at a body shop.. I think my fav is the broken engine mount, or the broken tranny mount... thoes ones make lots of noise.. and vibrate the entire car!

Just curious, what rpms are you at when you make this downshift and how hard do you engage the clutch?

Yeah, cause if you're at high rpms, and you downshift and pop the clutch, the wheels will catch for a second until the engine can catch up....

Mine also makes a funky noise when I brake hard from high speeds, but I believe this is from my messed up rotors and theses funky pads.

(Rotors are horribly warrped and the pads are stiff)...
