How about we agree that in a race between a stock Mach I and a decently modded (non FI) M3, that it will be a driver's race and the better driver will probably win.

Agreed hehe. I was going to buy a mustang before I bought the m3... ofcourse I was going to buy a e34 m5 as well... I really like the e34 5 series.... Plus 310 hp I6... or a 342 hp I6... too sweet to pass up.

The Mach1 Stang does better at lower RPMs...the extra displacement matters afterall! You might take him on a windy road (M3 corners better) but he would dust you on street drags.

So different publications show Mustang Mach 1's from low 13s to high 13s................too many factors can make this vary. I've also seen the Motor Trend report that states high 13's.

I am also sure we know that the numbers the magazine companies list for the 1/4 mile times for each car, are the absolut best you are going to do. They run those cars trying every single way to launch them, shift them, and make them go fast. I would be willing to bet that you average driver can't get within a few tenths of the magazine times for the car. Did that make sense???

I think the problem is that the mustang mach 1 seems to get different times from different magazines. For the main ones like car and driver and motor trend they both got 13.8's on the mach 1. However there are websites like the ones understeer listed where people seem to dip below the stock times. However mustang monthly might be a little biased? Still I like the power from stock mustangs, and the upgrade paths... I love the exhaust sound too. Stock for stock the mach1 is definately faster. Stock to modded, definately a drivers race.

I ran with one the other night and he had no more than a 1/2 car's length on me until we hit the redlight.

they aren't as fast top end, I bet after 100mph, the M will slowly start to walk away.

Right, the Mach 1 is basically the same body style and less horsepower that the 01 cobra, which ran 13.6-13.7 in the qm stock. So your looking at maybe a 13.8 running against you. e36 M3's can run a 13.9 stock if pushed to their absolute limits, with mods you easily get down into the mid 13's. Put on an intake manifold and your gunna be rocking. The m50 intake manifold, in my experience dampers the lower end and really puts the power into the racing band (4k to 7k rpm). And you can really feel it come on, almost like a turbo hehe. I've been racing a few mustangs lately and destroyed them. Infact they are sick that my 6 cylinder is faster than they're souped up 8. I don't know if you can take him with those mods, although your JC intake and chip are probably the best mods there. I think in any case you'll find its going to be a very close race.

Actually dyno's put them near the same HP figure at the Rear wheels (right around 270hp). This test was done a few times and the Mach 1 is almost .5 seconds faster in the 1/4mile because it can cut so much better 60'ft times due to its soild rear axel You can expect low 13's from a mach 1.

FWI... BMW's fastest engine ever made was a 4 banger (1,650hp)

Now that answer, the solid rear axle, really makes a difference. Is it just me or are the cobra's, even the new ones, made without limited slip? I was going to test drive one and the guy couldn't move it because one wheel was on ice, and the other one wasn't moving.

A friend of mine just got a 2004 Mach 1, he took it to the track the other day 13.34... so if you can beat that, then you can beat an unmodded mach 1.

I have always hated those ugly Ford tractors. I can not stand that a kid in a saleen(do not know if it was real or not) cleaned my clock. 30ish punch and he just plain left me. was not even close.I even jumped the start! It makes me wish for the days past when I had my 86 T/A. It ran traction limited 12.9's with 2.73 gears and open rear end. She took no prisoners on the highway and from 40 up to 160 or 170. used to freak out those 5.0 guys(could let off the gas and let them catch up then mat it and take off again). I want the M to do it but IS gonna cost SO much!
