How to remove the gear knob...

    Hi,

Ive got a 97 M3 and I need to replace the knob.. It seems pretty tight but didnt want to try and unscrew it as I dont know if its a screw or not..

Any one know how to remove the manual gearknob on the evo?

    Cheers

Not sure if it's the same, but guessing it is...you just yank up on it and it'll come free...held on by pure friction. Careful though, it'll suddenly give way and you'll punch yourself in the eye. You'll see many threads on people complaining about the way the shift knob is held in place, because when you're going for a nice spirited drive, you shift hard into second only to have your shift knob pop off in your hand...you redline and cant find third while everyone blows past you.

As of something like 1985ish... all bmws shift knobs are snap-ons. Sometimes than can be a real pain in the arse getting up, as in stradeling the center console and poping a few blood vessels trying to pull them up, may actually feel like they are going to break something before they come out. But be careful, if you have any type of illuminated knob, try not to rip the wiring out on your way up :P

              JonDarwin,

I think it's just like the shift knob...friction holds it on, just rotate it back and forth pushing it forward until it slips off...but if you're looking to never put it on again, you can take a carpet knife and just slice the thing off...
