    new guy with another question.

I asked a few days ago on how to solve the rattle sound from the engine (noise from vanos area). To make it simple i changed the vanos and it didnt help. It seems that the majority feel its the timing chain tensioner. Now my frist question: I have a 1996 US m3. What type of engine is this? Second question: does the car have an inner tensioner and outer tensioner? Third: Is changing the tensioner something I can do in my garage. Im not a mechanic but I do have experience. Any help would be great and thanks to those who replied to the earlier thread.

All I can tell you is the Euro engine goes by the designation S50, while the US spec engine is S52.

You can get lots of detail at www.eurospeed.org

    Good luck.

Actually that is incorrect. The 95 m3 had the engine designation s50 while the 96+ cars had the engine designation s52...

      1) so you have the s52 motor.

      2) Sorry but i am not so sure about which of the tensioners the car has.

      3) As long as you have a Bentley Repair Manual everyone seems to think anything can be done on this car at home in your garage. I would say if you have some experience you should be alright. Bentley = www.bimmerzone.com

Yes, but all the cars mentioned are 96+..the s50 is the 95 3.0l motor. Hopefully someone will chime in and back me up as this is true.

And also.. www.bmwregistry.com is the official site for stats and whatnot.

I believe the tenisoner is inside the motor. Not sure where, if its in the lower part of the engine, I would say you would prob have to remove the oil pan and get to it from there. Towards teh top, try removing the valve cover first and seeing if its there...

Well I don't think this is one you want to wing, get a manual, once you get the rad. drained and out and the fan out the way and anything else in the way, You may be able to work around the fan. It doesn't appear to be brain surgery. Haven't needed to do surgery to mine but if BMW didn't throw in any special tools It should be an afternoon job. Check sites like bavauto to see what parts they list for your year car.

Always get a quote from the dealer so as to see if it's worth your time. Also

you will feel good when your done and know you saved that money and gained experience.

                S50 B30 = Euro 3.0

                S50 B32 = Euro 3.2

                S52 B32 = US 3.2
