If I had to choose. I would get the m5. Its a sexy ride. very very comftorable. Very fast, and really good handleing imo. But hell, if I had the money, I would get both and be done with it.

I suppose its a matter of personal preferance.
It is a matter of preference. Also, the M5 is still a little more expensive than the M3... as similar as the cars are, there are a few differences which you should think about. Do you need more room, 4 doors, and more weight? with that, you get a more powerful engine... If you already have a 2-door, and you are not worried about the little extra cash that will get you the M5, then get it... - in your case, I'd prob do that...
definantly an e46 m3. The car just feels like more of an M as opposed to the added luxury and less sporty styling of the m5. Dont get me wrong, both cars are sweet but the m3 is more agressive looking and a little less mature.
If i got an m5 I would take it to RMS..despite their horrible reputation they make some mean SUPERFAST m5s. www.racemarque.com I might even just have them install the hardware and then I would get it custom tuned and feel safer.
I would say E36 all the way. My roomate had an 00' M5 for about 3 months and had nothing but drawer-wetting thrust giving him grins on his face. As nice as that was, the car had severe problems. The DSC is far more sophisicated than the ASC in our cars, and does FAR more limiting to the natural driving characteristics. Also, his DSC became stuck a few times, making driving choppy and unrefined. Also, the butterfly throttle bodies had a few problems, requiring cleaning and tuning...remember there are 8, we have one. At 18k miles when he got it for $54K @ SF BMW in north. cali, CPO, we were both extremely disappointed. The nav. system on the 00' M5s have smaller screens and extremely sub-par speed. The sound system had the rear panels of the car buzzing & rattling, as well. Satisfaction was low considering the price.
After I got my E36 M3, he found it a lot less powerful, but much more usable. What i mean by that is the M5 may have 400hp, but he probably had only a hand full of times where it was actually used. The car isn't balanced as well. The E36 inspires such confidence that you can almost always push the car right up to its limits. The few times where the M5 was seeing its limits, I almost saw my life's limits...if you get what i mean. I'd say the M5 is a cruising car.
As for the E46, my friend's 01' smg is quite fast. I'd say I could do w/ a rasp-X solution to the unrefined exhaust note on the E46s. Also, I could do w/ a 10% weight reduction. Again, too heavy with uncomparable balance to the E36. Granted, the E46 & M5 would dust the E36 in straight line scenarios, but the E36 would inspire more confidence and lose less speed due to over-powering/braking on windy roads and unpredicable down-slopes, which is where i like to do most of my hard-driving. I'd confidently say that the E36 would be SAFER on hilly/curvy roads as well. Most E36 owners would agree that there are things they have done in their E36 that they've never imagined accomplishing in another automobile.
Your already sorted in the smaller department...time to equip yourself with a bigger tool, this approach takes into account every possiblity, that's out there.

Its not that there's anything wrong with it like its not nice to look at...I think it looks great. it's just to me it doesn't say this machine is a friggin M...yeah the pipes give it away but it doesn't have the agressiveness like a M5 versus another 5 series....the M5 has a rear skirt and lip that you can easily tell apart from a typical 5...you know by looking at it that it is true motorsport. It just looks pissed... :fuming:
