I bought my 95 m3 a couple of months ago and noticed that there's no honking or siren when my OEM alarm is triggered. And yes, my horn does work when I press it.
Try holding down both of the buttons on the key fob (lock/unlock) for a few seconds. This should toggle the chirping sound. BTW - The horn is not used for the alarm.
I have another alarm question. Does having a red light down by the traction control/heated seat buttons mean there is an alarm installed?
Yes, thats the alarm light. It blinks certain patterns accordign to the reasons it was set off. The alarm horn is located under the hood, behind the right headlamp, bolted to the core-support.
Okay, cool...I haven't been able to confirm the presence of a horn, but I'll assume it's there. I only got one key and obviously no alarm remote. Is it possible to buy the alarm remote and then have it configured for the alarm? I'm assuming it is possible...anyone know the most affordable way to get this done?
Thanks

From what I have been told, you can buy new remotes, and program them to your current system. The horn is black, and looks like a mini bull-horn.

Thanks for the help! I can't believe I never noticed the horn before. Okay, one more question...can I buy a used remote and have it programmed for my car? There's one on ebay that may not be too expensive.

Yes, you can buy a used one, and run a search to see how to configure it to your car. It is a very complicated process that seems like a Pain in the A$$. The horn would be located on the passenger side of the car behind the headlight.
