How long is my interior temp. sensor fan supposed to run for??????

Well Im having an absolute blast with my M since i got it on friday.

But one thing i have noticed is that the interior temp sensor fan ALWAYS seems to be on. When i get in it in the morning or anytime before I even put the key in and turn the ignition on. Im sure thats what it is, the sound is right behind the little grill to the right of the climate control screen.

I actually just sat in the parking lot at school for about 10 minutes with the key out and everything off just sitting there waiting for it to turn off! But it just sits there happily whirring away. The car hasent sat for longer than 12 hours so I dont know if its on all the time draining the battery.

How long is that thing supposed to run for??? It seems like its ALWAYS on. IF somthing is wrong can it be easily fixed? Or would I have to replace the whole unit!! $$$$$ !!!!

    Tell me what you think!!!

    Thanks

    Brian

Itll run after you turn the car off until the car falls asleep. BMWs electronics stay 'activated' for about 12 minutes or so after you turn the car off. The main reason they do this is to protect the electonics from being switched on/off all the time as you run in and out of places, so BMW has a small time period they use to keep the electonics awake. After that, the car falls asleep and all the electonics are de-activated.

When I say electronics, I mean thinks like actuators, control modules.. etc....

The temp fan should stop after about 10 minutes.... if not.. have someone check it out.

          Flybry07,

We both learned something today :-).

I would never have guessed the electronics stayed "activated" after the car was turned off. That's a nice bit of trivia to know.

          Thanks again, Sirus.

I'm not sure what the temp sensor fan is, but should it even be running after the car is turned off? Or even if the HVAC system is off?

Yes, it does that, supposed to. Not 100% sure why, but I can find out. Its located in the HVAC controls, behind that one grille.

Yea Id like to know exactly why too.

While were on the subject any ideas on how to clean all the lint/dust collected behind that little grill for the sensor??? It's too far back there to get with a q-tip and im worried about blowing compressed air in there. I dont know if it affects the sensors readings but it surely looks ugly in my spotless interior!!!

You can take a nice powerful shop vac to the front, and itll get most of it out. Compressed air won't hurt it, maybe spin the fan fast, but it blows all that dirt into the back of your dash, or you can pop the unit out and blow air from the back of it.

I have taken liquid cleaners to thoes units before and nothings gone wrong.

They must have "fixed" that in the e46's.

Prob, I asked a tech and he had no idea why it stays on.. it said because its a bmw lol, Ill keep asking around for the exact reason. Now that I thinka bout it, I don't recall any e46 doing it... :P
