    Short shifter play...

How much play do you have with your shifters?

If mines engaged in third gear, my shift knob will move around about 1/2 inch... too much play? Bad bushings perhaps?

I don't know much about short shifters on M3's, but mine needs one desperately! The stock shifter is all over the place. What shifter do you have?

Sadly, I haven't figured that out yet. I bought the car with a bunch of mods, got most of the reciepts, but I haven't found one for the short shifter yet.

I need to get ahold of the previous owner and find out hehe.

Get in a car with the stock shifter and you will know immediately if yours has one or not. The factory shifter will get some play in it after a while as the bushings start to wear a bit. If you want an inexpensive short shifter, check out www.understeer.com or you can look into the more expensive units that UUC has.

My guess is that if you have that much play, then your shifter may still be stock.

I know for a fact that I do have a SSK, I am just not sure who makes it. I am just curious as to if that amount of play is normal....

I know exactly what the stock shifter feels like, I have prob driven at least 150 m3s since I started to work at bmw, I am just not all that fimilar with ssk's...

Yeah, even if it's a ssk, the bushings were not necessarily replaced. I just replaced mine when I pulled the transmission, but understeer.com and the bf put the ssk in last year, along with some tranny mounts.

I doubt you'd be able to tell the difference between the various ssk's anyway - if you can, then maybe having it say uuc under the shift boot really is worth 3 times the price : )

hmm... yeah, that's interesting - but the description here suggests that if you are experiencing slop, this particular item is your issue. That's just bs - in fact, there are several bushings under there that could cause the problem, without looking you won't know for sure (if the rubber is falling apart, it's probably not doing it's job).

It suggests replacing parts 10-15, notice that part 11 is there twice with 2 different pics. : )

Also, is it common in other parts of the world to refer to rubber as 'foam'? The write up refers to the bushings as 'foam', and mine certainly weren't foam.

I dunno. I guess I have to take a look under the car. I have to replace my output shaft and selector rod seals in my tranny anyways.. maybe a good idea to look at the linkage then.
