    WD,

What I am saying is that my "arse" got dragged off the road backwards twice with the ASC ON. One of those bits of sillyness cost me 8000$. The only two situations where it activated when I wasn't fooling around. The question remains how would those situations have unfolded w/o ASC intervention? My sense at the time was that I could have "saved" the expensive folley if I had full control of the car; but hard to speculate....

      Whoa, how did that happen?

An exerpt from my Bimmerforums post back in Apri last year...

So i'm preoccupied with all this stuff when i begin my return trip from Atlanta to Savannah. Raining hard, onramp from 85 south to 285 east, going about 45-50 in the slow lane (2 lane ramp) when i notice a red camero on my left passing me on the inside (it was a sweeping lefthander) about the time he was passed me his rear end broke loose and slid toward my left front quarter. I cut the wheel right to avoid the car and then had to steer left to avoid the retaining wall. About two 360's later i hit the wall at about 45 going backwards. This is not the worst part of the story though......After i called my State farm agent he informed me that the payment i was supposed to send last month was never received and my insurance had cancelled THE DAY BEFORE THE ACCIDENT. Of course the camero did not spin out nor did it stop...assmunch!

In a nutshell I had to eat the cost of repairs, long story about how the ins. payment was not sent... But my ASC was on and I felt like I was fighting it trying to regain control of the car. Again though, hard to speculate wheather it would have made a difference either way. I was obviously going too fast to accomodate the evasive manuver I made to avoid the camero, but I feel like the "technology" was no help (maybe even a hinderence).

Left front quarter... so you were driving backwards or what? Or did you mean left front fender? :smash:

I got state farm too heh. I deal with s/f at work all the time. Thats not right of them. Btw, if you don't mind, how much did the repair cost...

I am assuming since you were going around 45 and you smacked your ass end into a retaing wall, depending on where you got hit.. it would have cost 8k - 11k to fix. This is, of course, assuming the worst, where you have to replace the trunk floor, and/or a quater too.

Sadly, the avg cost of repair at my shop is somewhere right around $7,000. We just got another X5 in with an inital estimate of $22,000 to fix. And this is before we have even looked at it :P

Isn't the left front quarter the same as the left front fender?????

That is what they call a double whammy. Man that's painful. And the insurance company got away with it? So, yeah, how much did the repairs set you back?

I always turn mine off when i get in the car. I hate it when you are trying to accelerate hard and you can feel the throttle get "slowed down". How are you all turning yours off? I like it, but I wish that it would stay off until I turn it on.

Like I said, this is a safty/legal issue. They don't want to get sued because you forgot. If you want it gone, remove it.

Actually I was indeed driving backwards...J/K! Sorry...front FENDER. Total repairs cost 8000 plus an AA GenIII (600) and new O2 sensors (460). No suspension damage, no roof kinks, no door misalignment. Bought a junked rear clip for about 2500 and it was maticulously grafted on by North Perimeter Collision in Atl. who did the job at near cost as a favor for me, they also knew of my insurance situation. They did a phenomenal job, documented with pictures all the way and consulted with my son, who is in school to become a master restructural rebuilder/bodyman, and his teachers at UTI who used the rebulid as a teaching aid for their students. They basically drilled every spot weld to remove the clip and "seam" welded the new body panels back on and applied the appropriate corrosion resistant finishes, paint, etc. They then guide-blocked the entire rear section and made it smoother than new. Had to cut the "C" pillars just below the roof line, but no trunk floor involvement (can't even see the seam if you look with a microscope!). They are my fraekin heros...I cried when I saw the car. Monster props to them and the amazing work and value they provided. The guarentee for life and said that they would have gotten around 14K if it had been an ins. claim.

No. Cars have two fenders, and two quarter panals. They don't have rear fenders and they don't have front quarter panals :P

Nice. They did it correctly too. Thats good. Alot of shops know zero about how bmws are done. We see alot of re-works from other shops because they f'ed a car up. And what we do, is take that original estimate of ALL the work from the other shop, and completely re-do it. Usually to the owners expense.

Was going to say after reading that, 8k sounded a bit low, but it sounds like you got some nice hookups. Got some pics to share?

is it not possible for the almighty Conforti program around this? If i request it and pay for how could there be a liability issue? Has anyone ever asked him? maybe this needs to be it's own thread, maybe not

Things I have learned about ASC:

-Does not help with sideways skidding, fishtailing, drifting, etc. Only in straight line traction.

-It will NOT come back on for "emergency situations". I autocross my car and have gotten myslef into many "emergency situations". It stays off.

-Takes all the fun out of driving an ///M3.

-The switch can be easily modified with a capacitor to default it to OFF.

Due to the nature of a cap.. wouldn't it cause the thing to turn on/off over and over?

Or do I need to re-take my 4 years of electronics again, cause I am a bit rusty after 4 years.... :P
