Mine does it also. The whine goes with the engine RPMs. I got my ear down by where the sound was coming from and it appeared to be the alternator. I put a long screwdriver on the alternator and the other end in my ear and sure enough, it was the alternator. I've since had my diagnosis confirmed by the dealership. CPO will pay for all but the $50 deductible. BTW, the dealership guy said it's pretty common and that the alternator will work fine for quite a while. He said it's rare one actually fails. Most people just replace them due to the noise.

Well, I replaced mine because I thought it was bad, and got the noise with the new one.. so, my solution? Make the engine go faster to drown out the alt noise.... :P

Mind you it wasn't bad prob, mistake on my part. Oh well, can't return it. At least i have the comfort of knowing my alt is good heh.

I haven't been able to have it checked out yet. I just started a new job where I'm working a ton, but hopefully I'll have it in soon to be looked at. It gets a TON louder when the A/C or heater is on...and even more when the lights are turned on. It was really cold sitting at a drive through and it was so loud i had to turn off my heater and lights. during the day when its warm and no accessories are on it seems to be fine though.

The 40hp was for a chip/intake...and i think he said a few more things. Not really sure what other parts, but thats what he said. So I'll have to look into that!

EDIT: I'll make another post when I get everything figured out and fixed. No need to bring up the post, I'll keep you guys informed!

It gets worse with electrical load? I know my alt makes a nice whiny noise that gets worse when I add more electrical load to the car... and this is a new alt too.... *growls*... I find that curious... could you record the sound?

at least i know it won't fail on me. does anybody have a picture or whats where. I know which "wheel" it is but don't know what its called. also it seems like the hose is soaked in oil, but its not droping to the ground which tells me its a small leak because the oil doesn't reach the ground. It does get annoying do, when u have a wrx or a ***** on a stoplight next to u and ur car starts making this loud ass noice. it sux

My sounded similar, It was my water pump though. Got it fixed at a local shop and the sound "mostly" went away. I still hear a slight ticking at idle but eveything has checked out OK.

My car started ticking funny and I found I was almost a quart short on oil! You gotta watch these things, they drink the stuff.

I'm going to start checking every few fillups from now on!

Yeah, i know about the ticking u guys are talkin bout when the car needs oil but i believe this is a whole different devil where messin with. Its more of a "squeak" than a "tick". So did anybody come up with a diagram of what is what. I know what wheel is squeaking but cant tell a water pump from the other ones appart. I only know which wheel the alternator is, the rest i have no clue.

Well, lol, hope this helps, no, its not an M3 engine, but its the same idea.

Thought I had a better pic with the belts on, but I guess I don't. Hope this at least helps

Oh, and yes, we fixed this car.

                        Thanks, u da man!

yeah, my ac compresor seems to be leaking a little oil. Do those hoses even have oil in them? Maybe the oil is running down the hose. And the noise i narrowed it down to either the AC tensioner or the crank pulley. I would have to use the trick were u put a long flat head on the part and put my ear to it to see if its really that one. I know someone on this forum mentioned this trick.

The ac system has oil injected into it to keep the compressor lubed. If the oil is leaking out, usually its neon green, then your ac system has a leak in it too...
