"my car is auto"... psha.. I'm not even gonna talk to you anymore...

    I'm jus playin

"Most of us have spent well over $5000 in maximizing the performance of our M's".. you have no statistical data to back this up.

I'm through with this discussion. I don't think anyone said to use 87 or 89 octane gasoline, it was just a matter of could you. And the answer is yes, you can if you need to but I think we all agree to stick with 91+. As for the saving money issue, people think differently. Some will pay a little extra for security, while others think it isn't a big enough risk to waste valuable resources on. Money is money, I wouldn't mind having 300 extra dollars in my pocket every year but I also don't want a bill for a new engine in ten.. but it may not matter cuz my car might not be worth much by then anyway.

I can't comment much on race gas, but I know the boosters are total bs. A car is generally tuned to use a specific type of gas however, since our cars can adjust for worse gas.. maybe they can also adjust for better. We had a discussion about using supreme in cars that didn't need it a long time ago, so this is what my argument follows.

      Extrav. Dreans,

My argument was not based on the statistical correctness of what % of board members have spent over 5000 in mods. You did an excellent job of completely missing my point, which was, if only for your benefit as I'm sure it was fairly obvious to others, the cost/performance value proposition of using 93 (or 91) versus 89 octane is pretty good compared to the cost of the modifications required to squeeze additional HP from an M3.

        Dreams,

Hey I just wanted to apologize for being a raving asshole in my last post. I just got a letter indicating that I did not get a job I really wanted that I interviewed for last week and I guess I was just raging a bit. Didn't mean to be a prick....

Hey man, I'm sorry to hear that.

I know it's frustrating trying to get a point accross sometimes. I didn't mean to put emphasis on the statistic itself. I did go on to talk about the 'saving money issue' though and I agree with what you have to say. Basically, if you can afford an ///M, there should never be any reason to cheap out on gasoline.

I know lots of guys are anal about what they put in a car, but face it it's just a car it breaks down you fix it or get another one. I know lots of you guys would make sure your cars get the best money can buy and put junk inside your bodies at your local McDonalds.

One thing I forgot to say at the begining of this post is that I use 91 in my M3 but I have pupped midgrade in it once in a while cause I'm so used to putting it in all the other cars.

What I'm mostly worried about it not knowing if the gas you put in your car is actually the octane marked on the pump, lets face it, not everyone out there is an honest man.

Untill there's a sensor built in your car that detects the octane of the gas pumped in, you will never know what you put in your precious vehicle

And we all know how well and fast local enforcement laws work

Luckily for me, gas can still be found around here for 1.89ish, only a few places.. staring to go over 2 bucks now though :\

I would never put anything but premimum in my car. I am surprised your car isn't acting weird by putting a lower grade in, most end up doing funky things. Most off the wall places sell really cheap gas, less additives.. etc. I'll only use Exxon/Mobil or Shell too in my car. Ill fill up maybe once ever 1 1/2 weeks.

                  those were the days..

HOLY FREAKING CRAP. You guys are extremely LUCKY.

I have to pay $3.50 a gallon here in Chicago.

If I fill up by where I work, I can get away with paying $2.99 a gallon.

Feel lucky if your paying less than $2.50 a gallon for premium I envy you guys

My only choice in fuel for any of my BMWs is between BP Ultimate 98 octane and Shell Optimax 98 octane, although I did once put 95 octane Caltex into the 635CSI by mistake. I use 91 octane fuel only in my lawnmower and here we can't even buy 89. Why are the US motorists forced to put up with such low quality fuels? Doesn't seem right to have to put low performance fuel into high performance cars, my commiserations. Cheers, Matt in Sunny Australia.

Well I hope you consider yourself lucky, 98octane in IL is almost considered race gas, lol

Just on the "lucky" issue, yes we do get the best fuel but we do pay a lot for it. Yesterday it was $1.23 per litre that is about $4.30 US per US gallon. I have seen a lot of highly modified M3s in all their glory on these pages, with owners trying to get extra power with kn filters cai etc. To put anything but the highest octane fuel available in the area would in my mind be sacrilege, be that 98 or 95 or 93. You may not feel the difference when driving it with 89 or a mix of 89/93 but I bet your BMW's knock sensors do and then the ECU responds accordingly by going into its failsafe mode and retarding the timing and altering your fuel mapping, thereby reducing power and FUEL ECONOMY.

Far better to do less miles with the right fuel. Otherwise you may as well drive a 325i and use the money saved for the correct fuel!!! (Just one persons opinion) Cheers, Matt  :agree:

I really hope gas prices fall..its getting ridiculous that I paid $3.09/gal yesterday outside of DC in Woodbridge, Va. (Trevor...I saw a bunch of signs for Fairfax)

NJ has some of the nations cheaper gas prices and even there it was still $2.75 for 93.
