    NJ window tint laws

I just bought a 99 M3 that has window tint on everything but the windshield. Did BMW tint windows from the factory? Is there any way that I can determine if this is factory if they did? I know that NJ does not allow window tint on the windshield and the front side windows, but I'm not sure if there are exceptions for vehicles that came tinted from the factory. I searched and didn't find anything other than the standard (aftermarket) laws regarding tint.

Oh, 1st time posting here, too.

Nice. Welcome to the family. Nice color btw. I can't remmeber if bmw did factory tinting back then. If they did, either the entire window is tinted, or they used a very good film, and its very precice...

Oh, get some pics of your car too.

When I got my car, it had 5% tint all around, even over the top 1/4 of the windshiled, which is very illegal in Va, however, it was easy to pull off (cheap tint I suppose, even though red looks good with dark tint)...

Thanks for the welcome. I wasn't sure if BMW tinted from the factory and I was guessing since the rear edges of the front side windows had "dots" in the tint. Not dots as in bad-tint-job, but dots that are part of the tinting and make it appear like a factory job. I think the tint is simply a film which shouldn't be too hard to remove. Right now I'm positive the car will not pass NJ inspection with the tint on the driver and passenger windows.

Absolutely love the car so far. 58k miles on it with CPO warranty still ticking, too, which makes it that much sweeter.

And the more you drive it and learn it, the more fun it will become. BTW, welcome.

As a follow-up, the tint is likely aftermarket. It's a film applied to the inside of the window. I can see a slight tear on the passenger window close to the side mirror. This will make is easy to remove for NJ inspection.

Wait a second...you can't have ANY tint on the windows. Anyone in Jersey get around this or know a place that doesn't care?

I'm moving there and no doubt I'll have to get an inspection soon. sigh. I like my tint. It's legal in Texas- 35%

While I have no real interest in tint for my car I can vaguely rememeber hearing somewhere that the rear tint can be 35% and the fronts and the windshield must not be tinted.

A moderator on bf.c lives in NJ as well and he told me, he just rolled down his front windows during the inspection (i guess it would only work in a hotter summer day). He said he passed fine as the windos never even got touched.

WIth all of that said I know there might be some places that will remove and re-apply tint every 2 years for a small fee.

I think it depends upon where you are with the tint if you will have trouble with the Police. I have friends in my town with dark tint of no more than 15% all around and they have no trouble, but sometimes (those with louder exhausts who are more noticeable) get pulled over in the neighboring town because of the tint percentage.

NJ law states that tint is illegal on the windshield, front driver, and front passenger windows. You can have practically any darkeness (i.e. limo tint) on the other windows. Sorry if I confused you.

I see plenty of cars driving around with the front windows tinted. But, I live in a small town with "enthusiastic" police, so I'm trying to avoid any conflict. :argue:

No no...thanks for the heads up guys.

I appreciate it. I don't know what I'm going to do about my front windows being tinted, but I'll figure it out.
