E36 M3 GT Problems with cold engine

    Hello,

I come from germany and I am asking for a friend of mine who drives a M3 GT (3,0 Litres, 295 Hp). When he starts the cold engine and during the time, oil and water get on regular Temperatures (warm-driving-Phase, Phase of heating up the engine) the engine does not run properly. It shakes as is the rpm level is to low, as if it is close to stop or only runs on 5 cans. When the engine is hot, it runs perfect. The Rpm Level ist regular and not too low. What is going on there, does anybody have an idea?

I apologize for my bad english! :banghead:

Hmmm. Perhaps its running a bit too rich. You need someone to read any faults that are stored in the dme, if any. And yes, they get stored, even though the check engine light doens't come on.

Cold start on euro motors has always been bad, they are worse than the US motor. Just give in a minute when you start it to stabilize its idle then drive it very gently till its up to temp.

        Hello

I had the same problem before, then my air mass meter was cleaned out properly, and the problem has since then dissapeared.

        BS

well would it be for the same reason the e46 M3 and the e39 M5 have those little lights on the tach that tell you when the engine is "warmed up".

              Hello everybody!

Well, I told my friend, to check, if the engine runs to rich, to read out the DME and to clean the air mass meter (good thought).

I can only say, that his problem is a NEW, never before seen problem on his car - it does not belong to a regular warming up - the engine sounds very wheired. The car has been to a BMW dealer, but he could not find a thing. I think, he read out the ROM of the car also. But I do not think, he checked the AMM.

              @ Extrav Dreams:

Danke für die Hilfe, das Deutsch ist echt gut - woher können Sie so gut deutsch sprechen?

I ask all of you over here in the US, because I couldn´t find a German M3 Page in the Internet - wheired isn´t it? So again - thank´s for your help!

I have the same prob some days. When I come to a stop the rpms start dropping down almost to killing the motor but once the vanos or what ever contolls the air to fuel mix its all good.
