New rims steering wheel shakes Help?

I just got new rims but there's a problem. My steering wheel shakes a bit. It's not that bad but it never did it with the contours and it kind of bugs me. I went yesterday and got them balance at mineke. Its better but its still kind of there. YOu think its worth taking it to another place to get them rebalanced or could it be something else? Thanks for any help..

Old tires? Brake and shake? *grins*

Assuming they are brand new tires and rims, and prefectly balanced, and you're not braking, have your suspenion componets checked. Loose bushings will cause a shake also.

      Shakes at all speeds?

      Shakes more at some speeds?

Does it shake more/less/same when you apply the brakes?

The steering wheel shakes till u hit about 60mph then it stops. Brakes are good and it doesn't shake when i apply the brakes. Not sure about the suspension compents though.

Sounds to me like the rims are out of balance. Could be a bent rim making the balance more difficult, or just a bad tire balancing job.

I'd take the wheels back to the balancer and ask them to do it again from scratch, first checking for the possibility of a bent rim. Could just be a bad balancing job... that happens. Be nice and they should do it for free.

Could be a slightly bent wheel...another thing I was thinking is maybe a tires is bad (bubbled on inside, treat separating, etc). On my old golf the rear tire tread was separating and it caused a shake in the car. Just a thought.

It's probably a poor balancing job.

Most chains, like Meineke, can't really do the job on big performance rims and tires. Though they say they can.

Happened to me when I bought 4 new Toyo's for my first M3. I had the first shop reimburse me for having to have them balanced properly.

Tires and rims are brand new so it must be the balancing job. I got it done at the first shop for free i know th e guy but, maybe he doesn't have the most up to date balancer. I think i may just bring it somewhere else to get it done. Thanks for th e help.

Not sure if the BMW rims are hubcentric, but if they are like VW's, then this could be your problem. Putting aftermarket rims on a VW product is always a gamble if the wheels aren't held in place by the hubs rather than the lug bolts or wheel nuts. When you install aftermarket wheels on a hubcentric design vehicle, you should install a plastic or metal ring that matches the hub to the wheel. Worth a look.

When I bought new snow tires a few months back, I had a shake too, at highway speeds, and got the shop to rebalance the fronts. He said they were spot on and to check suspension components. Low and behold, just a month ago, I discovered my left front strut was leaking oil. New suspension kit is on order and I think that will cure the shake. So, don't leave out the suspension check. I did find that I could reduce the shake by backing off the lug bolts on each wheel and re-tightening them by hand (after market rims for my winter tires).

Salty is correct! BMW wheels are hubcentric, and VERY sensitive to runnout. If they are not hubcentric wheels you will absolutely need a centering ring which slip-fits to the wheel center bore and the hub diameter. Any decent vendor should have told you that...
