    track wheels and tires

I have a 98 M3 2-dr with H&R coil overs, lowered 1/1/4" from stock, with stock camber--I am thinking of getting Kosei K1 racers and running Yokohama race tires 245/40/17 at all four corners for the track-

do you think I will nees spacers and/ or fender-rolling??

what about Victoracer 255/40/17's????is it possible???? won't that size be too tall for the rears

    any advice much appreciated

    Thanks

I run kosei k1's with 235/40 r comps, no roll and no spacers with GC coilovers. With 255's you will need to roll the rear fenders. My next set will be 255's.

Do you think there would be a tradeoff in steering precision with the wide tires all around?

the steering gets heavier, but thats a good thing. The extra grip makes up for any downsides it may have.

I run the 255 Victoracer on K1s all around, with 10mm spacers up front (GC Coilovers though), and moderately rolled rear fenders. Tire Rack will loan you the fender rolling tool for free (just pay shipping) which makes the job very easy. Granted, the 255 Victo will be stuffed but the extra size is nice.

The ideal tire for you, IMO, is the Kumho Ecsta V700 in a 245/40/17, which they just recently added. Not only will it fit better but it weighs ~5lbs less than the Victo :0. Another option, depending on your budget, is the Hoosier A3SO4 in a 245/40/17 but will also require some fender rolling and spacers.

          Hope that helps.

            thanks for the info:

I just ordered Yoko A032 R's but think I made a mistake as Tire Rack is shipping me Soft compound, which I think is not ideal--I never autoX so I think I should have gotten their Hard compound-will try to resolve with Tire Rack-

I like the Kumho option, but didn't they just recall a bunch for tread separation???

255's sound neat also, but I was hoping to avoid rolling the rears, if possible

that was the 710's, they don't make that tire in a size for our cars.

Any specific reason you went with the a032r? Its a pretty crappy r compound, more like a sticky street tire.

I didn't think I had too many options in a 245/40/17--I don't think I am ready for Hoosiers yet, as these will be my first track tires--and I hear the Hoosiers won't last at all-

I will look into the Kumho's you mention, but I thought I heard some buzz that they aren't as grippy as the Victoracers--I am tempted to go to 255/40's, but then I am sure I will have to roll the fenders--I guess that's okay if I am careful

I think the v700 now come in a 245/40 17, you might check those out. But the yoko's will last the longest.

Another tire to take a look at is the Toyo RA1. I bought a set for my car and they are great. I've also heard they last alot longer than most track tires. Expect about 175 bucks for each tire.

actually, I think Toyo only comes in 235's for 17" wheels

                          RA1's are 235's or 255's. The only 245's are v700's, hoosiers, and yoko's.

so I guess I will try Yoko's if I can get the hard compound-the Kumho's have to be shaved to run in the dry, and that will cut down on their longevity-if these are really not much better than my S=03's, then maybe Hoosier next time around, or pop up to 255's and do Victoracers-
