How to tell if I have pastic/metal impellars

I bought this car last August, and the seller told me that he had replaced the radiator due to the plastic neck coming out of the top being cracked. I think this is a common problem since the plastic gets brittle.

Anyway, I don't know how to tell the difference between the water pumps to see if he replaced that as well.

If I need to buy a metal impellar one, where is a good place?

    Thanks,

Late build 97 got the new impellers, so try bavauto.com probly around $80.00 or so. I just went over this w/ my chief mech. for my car so you need to swap son.

Not sure. I read that the only true way to find out is to actually take it out.

I believe I read somewhere like 5/97 build dates and later. Not sure. Mine's 7/97 so I HOPE mine's okay. Still haven't checked it though.

That is exactly correct. If you buy a new pump, spend the extra $$$ and get a real BMW pump. The "OEM" pumps at bimmerparts.com, and the like, are junk.

            What up Cameron,

If you have questions like this just go ahead and give me a call....i do only live a block away. I believe my build date is a August 96, but I took mine out to make sure and in fact it was a metal impeller. It really doesn't take much to take it out and if you do find it is plastic go to eurasian for the cheapest place. eap4parts.com. later dude hope that helped,

            A.J.

              Was it a recall?

And what if it goes? Just pull over, turn it off and have it towed. Does a brief overheat really bend heads in an M? If so, gimme a 57 small block and I'll replace the water pump with that!

Recalls are federally mandated updates forced upon car makers due to safety issues. Service bullitins as BMW call them are by BMW with something they found and that they'll address.
