    Depreciation depression

Can anyone explain why, with the m3 being one of the most desirable cars in the world, they can fall in value almost 10k in 3 years? I paid about 20500. for mine when 4 yrs old (below low kellys) and 37 months later have people balking at 13500. That's about 200./month in depreciation not including upgrades. I thought a 4y.o. M3 would've lost most of it's value already and never thought they'd dip below 15k ever...!

Every new bodystyle change to a series in a car causes the ones before them to fall in price. Seeing how we are approaching another body change for the 3's , expect them to fall again. Just remmeber, when you sign your paperwork on a new car, you lose like 10k+ in value instantly.

Thats one reason. Sure there are otheres.

I wouldn't care what my M3 is valued; it is priceless to me. I would give both the townhome I live in, and the Rodeo that I drive to work just for the sheer driving pleasure that the M3 offers. Although, I know it can be a little fustrating when trying to sell your M3 and the valuation falling well below what you feel is fair. But, one question...Have they driven it yet? How could someone say "no thanks" after a spirited run in what many (including myself) consider the gauge for all other sports cars to be measured; the E36 M3. BTW I feel your pain, and it sounds like you need a nice long drive

I would but I"m about to roll 77,777 on the ODO and want the next owner to have that luck...

And what do e30 M3s go for?

I guess the people who need the latest, greatest have moved on to the next thing. I also have a hard time figuring how M3's are going for less than what my brother's 97 328 IS went for a year and a half ago. On the bright side, I expect I paid top dollar in today's market for my 98, but am happy with the purchase, as it seems as close to new as I could expect...And this is my dream car after all.

And yet things like rx7s TTs and Supras are going UP in value-go figure.

ive heard that the "rule of thumb" on E30 M3's are that most likely if u get one under 15k after all the repairs and what not done to it it always comes up to 15k or a little less... but thats just wat ive "heard"

              E30 M3's Rock!

i think the prices are starting to hit a bottom though. For 10-15k you're getting a hell of a lot of car for the money. Enthusiasts know that and thus I doubt you'll see too many nice e36 M3s going for cheaper than 10k. It's really the same with the e30 I never see any really cheap ones out there because at a certain price level there's a lot of people that wanna jump on board for a performance bargain. Don't feel bad though, remember you also bought your car right around the time that the E46 M3 was released, and of course that's going to hammer the resale.

I wonder if location plays a part in prices. In the pacific NW, a nice e36 M3 would sell for 18-22K. I just payed 19.5 K for my 97 (56K on the odometer) and researched them for several months. Unless the mileage is really high, that's what they are selling for up here in OR.

Might have something to do with them being less pleniful vs a place like So Cal?

Location plays a huge role. Fun cars + warmer weather = higher prices. I remember when I was looking for my car I noticed prices here in the Northeast were substantially lower than out west or down in Florida. Especially when you buy during the winter season prices really hit rock bottom. I plan on buying my next motorcycle in the winter because bikes follow the same trend out here. eace:

I really think that it is the auto that is hurting your resale also. The problem is that the people who buy autos are often not enthusiasts, or are buying auto for a daily driver. There are OBVIOUSLY exceptions and trust me, being from Houston, TX with all its traffic, I can totally understand.

So, the hardcore enthuasiasts which are the typical demographic for your car, aren't interested because of the tranny. The posers who buy M3's aren't looking at cars as old as an e36 anyway.

If you lived in LA...you could sell this thing easy I bet with all their traffic. Wait a second...you're in Long Island? I would have thought everyone WOULD want auto up there.

I'm really surprised man. I saw the pics of your car too and it looked great!

What's killing you right now is the bad economy too. New cars are being sold with stupid low APR's and that leads to a weak used car market. There, that's my explanation.
