    oil change question

Im going to start doing my own oil changes $90 is getting kinda expensive..How many quarts of oil for 3.2L do i need? Also i dont want to start a debate over what oil to use.. Ive read many posts of people choosing from personal preferance and temp of where they live... I was planning on using mobil 1... Any objections??

    thanks in advance

specs say 6 quarts, I buy 7 in case, and it seems to gobble up 6.5 quarts nicely

mobil 1 sounds good, I use castrol, but don't have a preference for either...

I use 6.3 qts of the Mobil 1 and have had no problems. Make sure you get a reset tool (I got mine from Bavarian Autosport) so you don't have problems with the computer. Money well spent and extra cash in your pocket are great things.

Hrm, my maintenance light never comes on..

Could it be related to the fact that I don't get a fault code for my HIDs?

Maybe I have an "intelligent" computer that doesn't bug its owner when nothing is really wrong?

Every tech has said 7 when I changed mine.

6.9 us quarts I believe (or .8? definitely more than .3 : )... and it takes every drop, then another quart after 3k... (I use mobil1 because I never find the time to do the oil changes - lets me stretch it out a bit)

still trying to find a place to buy it bulk - found a local shop that will give case discounts, but it still doesn't drop it much (a case is only 6 quarts, so you need a case plus)

I use Mobil 1 15w50 6.5 quartz. When I did my first oil change I put in 7 and smelled burnt oil after some spirited driving so I recommend 6.5 and check the dip stick every week or so(according to the manual, check it when its cold). Just don't let the level fall below the lower notch. Oh, BTW my reset tool is a paper clip. Here's a helpful website: http://www.geocities.com/desmobobinparadise/four/diy/diy_reset_oil_inspection_lights.htm

Do you notice a difference in ride quality after adding another quart at 3K? I haven't heard of people doing this, but it seems like it makes some sense.

Don't just randomly add another quart at 3K. Most M3's burn oil and depending on the weight of the oil used, 3K miles my be enought time to burn off 1 quart. . . Hence adding another quart to make it an even 7 again.

If I do the oil service light reset before the light comes on, does it reset the counter, so that now the counter will be synched with my oil change?

I've had my bmw dealer do it here in State College and it cost 21 bucks. Although I bought the oil 15W-50 from walmart. That was 7 bucks for the oil filter too and then the labor all added to that 21 bucks. I think my stealer is really great hehe
