    Intake Questions... please help

Ok ... I have a simple question I am doing my research on a Shark injector and intake, and (maybe Im ignorant) I cant seem to understand the Huge price differences in intakes.

Some are carbon fiber, others titanium, but who cares. I mean isnt it just a freaking pipe that lets in more O2 to the engine?!

So please help my why I can justify spending $300+ for one intake, when I can get the similar one (granted without a heat shield) for $30 dollars on ebay.

Someone please explain the differences to me. :argue: So I can make an informed decision.

I don't think there is much difference either. I have the PAR intake and my gains are at least the same as the more expensive intakes. This is dyno proven by the way. I do think that you will want one with a heat shield or one that goes way down towards the brake duct to get cold air like the Benfer intake. Without this, you will be just giving the engine more hot air which doesn't do much for you.

Check out the FAQ section, there is a large Intake thread.

Bottom line is they all do about the same thing. Get either a long one with a filter that sits out of the engine bay, or a short one with a heat shield.

http://www.benferperformance.com/ makes a less expensive long intake. The site seems to be down right now.

Well, the reason given for different material typically relates to the heat transfer related to different materials.

Carbon FIber= supposed to accept very little engine heat and therefore keep the charge cold

Aluminum= supposed to accept heat from the engine, and in the case of the in-bumper systems without heatshields that could be a bad thing.

I really dont think the intakes differ much in power from one to the other, with the exception of the kits that sit up high closer to the engine and lack a heatshield. cough*bavauto*cough

                    Check out www.carboniointakes.com

I have one of those. I feel a little better about spending 300 if it is CF?

Mine came with the car, so it wasn't my money in the first place.

You have to pay to play with these cars.

Check out CosmosM3 on bimmerforums. He's sold probably 100+ intakes. I bought one for about $120. 3.5" piping and K&N filter.

Ok here you go ...if you can't find it I'll post it tomorrow for you. There is a site which I believe is somewhere here posted which shows you how to make your own. I went on Ebay and ordered an acura setup

" Item number: 2472057609" do a search. I ordered it for 40.00 for everything....I wanted blue to match the car. I will probably upgrade to a K&N soon. but a little mod and it's done and I can say I did it not some overpriced Dealer (dinan) and I'll get the same hp and it looks better.

I can always pay 100.00 for an AC Schnitzer decal and put on it.

Please, I think if you do the work yourself you can be proud and drive hard.

Anyone that buys the parts and gives them to their mechanic to put on....

....NO RESPECT...and please refrain to "Look what I had done to my car

rather than "Look what I did to my car"

Go for it, if these guys are doing it and racing for pride and trophies they must have picked up some good stuff on the way.

                          :rockband:

I dont think the long ones are worth it. They get exposed to alot more dirt and debrie than the shorter ones, which could make it past your filter and into your engine, same with mosture. Thats one thing I woudl never do. I say short.

On a side note, you could extend your ac lines from your compressor to cool the air inside the housing first... :P

Wouldn't a PreCharger work just fine in protecting the filter from the elements?
