    questions

i posted this in the general section but was told to repost it here so it would get seen more. so here it is

just wanna introduce myself and ask a question.

i've been reading the FAQ's and doingsome research on the M3 and have really got interested in the car. I currently own a 240sx and i like to do a lot ofth repairs on it by myself. Ive had it for 2 years and have been driving for about 2 and half. My roomate insists that buying a BMW or any german car is a bad idea because according to him "they are too hard to work on and to do DIY jobs". Is there any truth to this or is he just ignorant. I haven't found anythign in the FAQ about how hard it is to work on the M3 so i thought i would ask. my other questions ill research before asking... ok thanks

Ignorant. I love working on my M3. And other peoples for that matter. Yes, some things can be a PITA though, but hell, ever car has its PINA repair, most stuff is easy, and straight foward.

Here is a link to a great DIY site:

Tons of DIY jobs. I think that with any very new car it becomes more difficult to work on it yourself, but the e36 M3 does not fall into this category.

These cars seem pretty easy to work on. I knew very little about working on cars when I got mine, but I feel comfortable doing a lot of things myself. This forum helps a lot too

wow thanks for the site. i didnt think it would be that hard to work on. ive been all over my 240, swapping an auto tranny out for a manual tranny...so then my roomate is just a biased ford owner then...lol

Is it just me or do most Ford owners have a propensity for being scared of "Ze Germans"?

I just read your thread from the general section. Some guy said that the M3 engine would be gone after 50k miles. That's definately not the case with the e36 M3. Many people actually refer to them as "bulletproof".

heres another question that i asked in the other section:

how reliable is buying an M3 that has around 100,000 miles or is it one of those things that depends on the car. i know their is certain things that i read in the FAQ but just wondering wut kinda tune up type things i might run into and how much it'll run me

Well, I sure know my previous engine was bullet proof when the last owner exploded it to peices....

But I got the better end of the deal :P

Part scarsam. However, you over-rev any engine to a certain point, its going to blow up. I dont' care who makes it and what its made of, its sheer physics.

That cleared up. BMW engines are very strong. We still got a 22 yearold e21 in the driveway that was my everyday car. Aside from gaskets and the normal stuff, its got the orignal block to it. Never rebuilt once, its now showing signs that it could use an overhaul though. But thats after 244,400 miles on it, for 22 years, and several cross contry trips in it.

I have even red-lined the engine many many times before and nothings happened to it (gas pedal fell sideways and got stuck, don't ask)....

The point is, BMW makes good, strong, reliable cars.

You take care of them, they'll deffinaly take care of you.

as with most cars. so i shouldnt worry about M3's with 100,000 + miles on it.... i mean my car now is 15 years old with about 68,000 miles in it. so im sure there are low mileage M3's but then they wont be in my price range most likely

You can prob find an m3 with 50k for like 19k if you look hard enough.
