    1997 M3 racing/shifting help??!!

I have a automatic 1997 M3. sometimes i play around a bit just to see how the car runs. i see that there is a E button, a S button, and a M button next to the shifter. when i put it on S it takes off fast, but like seems as if in higher gears its not the same, when i put it on M it takes off real slow, but is REALLY fast when i shirt myself. can some1 tell me what the best way of shifting is, and gettin a good start off the line??

    Thankx all

Theres been much debate about getting a good jump with an auto. One thing not to do is slam the tranny into gear right under the cut-off rpm.

If you want, its less damaging, still not as good, but you can hold the brake down while you floor the car, lets some power build up in the torque converter and just relase the brake, that'll get you a good launch. S is for sport, E is for economey, and M is like 1/2 manual or some bs like that.

When I say floor it, I mean literally mean that, but for like 2 seconds or so, not for like 5 minutes...

I would leave the tranny in S mode for quicker shifting. Its like poping the clutch with a manual. When you apply power while the brakes are on, its stored for a couple seconds in the torque converter. When when you release the brake, its all shot to the rear. Make sure ASC is off too :P

so u are saying leave it in S mode. put my food on the brake, and floor it. then when the light turns green take my foot off the brake? and i never have ASC on. when should i use it?

Use your ACS when the roads are wet or icy, or if you let someone drive your car that's not quite as good a driver as you. It basically keeps you from spinning out. If you're willing to pit your breaks against your drivetrain, go ahead, but understand that you are putting great stressesd on your car, stresses that will take their toll either in a big ugly metal on metal, grinding, smoking, broken type thing, or a slow, loostening, ratteling, bad shifting, type of thing. Clear? I didn't think so. Our cars are not dragsters, they are road cars. If someone wants to race you, take him to a windy road and see if he can keep up. If you want to put less stress on your drivetrain and still take off fast leave it in drive, little button in s or sport mode, and stomp it. When you stomp it, be sure the little switch under the gas pedal is depressed. It is the superfast button and makes you go zoom.

Your ACS is always on when you start your car. You have to manually turn it off every time you don't want it.

Just wanted to make sure you knew that when the light is ON, then the system is OFF and you have to press the button to turn the light ON.
