Dinan Software Upgrade for 1997 OBDII M3

I have a question with regards to the Dinan Computer Upgrade for a 1997 M3 (OBDII).

Is it a re-flash of the ECU or is it an actual chip that is replaced in the ECU?

When I just purchased my 1997 a few weeks ago I had the dealership run a warranty/service log on the car and found out that it was upgraded with the Dinan Software from an authorized BMW dealership that sells Dinan products. BONUS!!!!
