    Help Me Convince My Father

    hey everyone,

i need some help with a stubborn a$$ father. This is the situation. When i was 17 my parents gave me their Ford Expedition with about 100k miles on it, and I have dirven it for about the past 2 years. It now has 130k on it and I am ready to buy a different car. I desperately want an E36 M3 but for some strange reason my fatehr thinks my ford will last another 50 or 60k, and he will not let me sell the expedition.

I already told him that I would pay for the E36, but he will not allow me to sell the expedition. So what i need from you guys is some reasons taht i can tell my father to allow me to sell my car so i can buy an E36. I know this sounds like im a spoiled brat, but the fact is that i pay for everything in my life, except for the car because it was given to me and was already paid off. none the less i need some input on your experiences with your E36s that may help me with thie case. the main reason i need to get rid of this ford is because i get 10mpg and with a 25 gallon tank @$2.21 a gallon, it hurts every time i go to the gas station.

I have driven plenty of BMWs, both my parents have BMW's (330i and 740iL) but i have never owned one or had one as a daily driver. So if you could PLEASE help me and just give me come concrete reasons why you love your E36 and maybe why my father would be inclined to allow me to sell my ford.

thanks in advance for any help.

one good reason is, suvs flip, roll, etc.. i am scared shitless when i'm in one, they handle like crap, every time you slam on the brakes it feels like the suv is about to flip forward.. tell him that m3 is a lot safer, the brakes are a lot better, and handling is incredible with a decent suspension.. to this day i have not been in a car that i liked better than the m3. yeah i've been in nicer cars and faster, but over all the m3 is one of a kind.. another thing, go offroad the hell out of expedition, mess it up, insurance will pay for it, buy m3 with that money.. (u didn't hear this from me)

I'd mention that the brakes are about as good as they get in North America. Superior fuel economy (In comparison to an SUV), depressed prices of E36 M3's (good time to buy one), likelyhood that Expedition is about to take a big hit in re sale as people shed their SUV's for the next thing. Solid rear drive platform is easy to work on and proven. Try to sell him on a 4 door, as it will make you seem more responsible. Also rich girls are attracted to M3's , so if everything works out, you can spend the rest of your life taking care of your parents and one day put them up in a fancy retirement home.

Why sell the suburban at all? Tell your dad you repsect his decision to keep the Suburban, but you need the experience of owning your own car. If you're as independant as you say, you should be allowed to spend your own money as you see fit, and obviously since you're a BMW family, Dad can't object to your choice of car! Tell him it's probably a good idea to keep the suburban around for hauling and stuff. He'll sell it in a year!

Well, I dissagree. Since you're a BMW family, your Dad knows what an M3 is, and doensn't want you to have one because it is a performance car. Let's face it, it is not that he wants you to keep the SUV as much as he doesn't want you to be out racing and screaming around town and find yourself over a cliff or rapped around a tree. The fact is an SUV may handle and break terrible, but chances are you are not going to take a freeway onramp in it at 90. The fact is, in the back of his mind he thinks that if you do get in an accident you will at least be alive in the SUV. It is the same argument every parent has with their teenager, get a big car so when that accident happens, they will not be the dead one in the little sports car. You have an uphill battle, one I am not sure you can win, even with all the facts about the great brakes and handling. Let's face it, car enthusiasts like to drive their cars, and push them every once and a while, and your Dad knows this. He knows you are going to hit 100+ sometime if you get an M3 and no matter how many times you tell him you won't and you will be a responsible driver he won't beleive you, no matter how much he may want to and you want him to. I think the only approach is to appeal to his compassionate side. Say "look Dad I have been driving that SUV for 2 yrs now with a clean record(hopefully that is true, otherwise you don't have much hope). I love the M3 and really want one. I am 19 yrs old now, not a 16 yr old new driver. Please let me get this car." Good luck.

do you NEED the money from the sale of the expedition in order to buy your M3? or do you have enough funds to buy the M3 straight up? If he doesn't want the expedition back and won't let you sell it... then just keep it as a 2nd car and buy the M3... since its your money and your not asking him to pay a cent (plus your over 18) I don't see how he can try to control how you spend your own hard earned money...

I don't really have personal experience in convincing the parents since I bought my own after I finished college and secured a job... but 2 things that parents value in a car for their child are safety, and not asking them to pay for it...or if you do ask them to pay for it.. then it to be a good value (aka reliable and not cost too much)... ... safety the car has you covered... I've seen some pretty bad accidents in E36's and the driver walked away.... it also has standard abs brakes, air bags, ASC, and other safety features... the M3 will out handle, out brake, and out accelerate your expedition... this can be a safety feature and help you avoid an accident... handling, you avoid an obstacle (or car) in an emergency situation, brake.. you avoid hitting something else... acceleration.. you get out of harms way...

just tell them the expedition was a nice car and that you appreciate the gift and using it for the past 2 years, but its past 100K now and your concerned for your safety and reliaiblity issues. What if you get stranded at 2AM in the morning after leaving a club and no ones out to help you.. or worse yet.. your broken down and some psycho stops...

just tell them you want a safer, reliable car and that you will pay for all incurred costs (cost of vehicle purchase, gas, and insurance) and I don't really see how they could say no... just make sure you have all the available funds and don't make any empty promises to them...

I think this is probably the reason...

You could maybe get some leverage with the huge friggin gas mileage difference, the safety credibility and resale value of a BMW.

Tell him he can set a governor on it for max 90mph LOL

If he wants you married and out of the house. Then the M is for you. Chicks will flock to it...O wait is that a good thing to tell your dad. lol

If I was a parent of a teenager, I sure as hell wouldn't want him to drive a sports car. Not that I didn't want one badly at that age. If you really want one, get it yourself. If you pay for it, you'll also be less likely to do something stupid with it (which is likely anyway - we all know cause we were all that age once). Sorry it's not what you want to hear.

I was in the same situation...I am 19 and I bought my M3 at the end of last summer. I had always loved these cars, but I could never get my parents to spring the loot for one. So finally I worked my a$$ off for a summer and scrounged enough cash to get one without selling the Honda that my parents got me. Then came the "sports car" argument posed by my mom...My dad is a Porsche nut and he got his first one when he was around my age so I used that info to battle my mom's thought that kids shouldn't drive fast cars...so do some history searching and find out what your old-man was driving when he was your age. Whenever my mom got pissed about it saying that "so and so drives an old truck, why do you need an M3", I just simply bring up the fact that she "really loved Dad's Porsche when you guys were in college" and she lets it go. Also, since your parents both drive BMW's, you don't need to stress the safety/resale/handling/etc. stuff with them, they already know. Just say you'll pay the difference in insurece (there's an incentive not to get speeding tickets/wrecks) and you'll pay for the M w/out having to sell the Ford. Keep the beloved Ford around or give it back to the folks, and like somone already said, they'll sell it in a year. If you really get desparate, tell them how much the giant-a$$ Ford polutes the world and how clean the M3 is :hmm: . Good luck man, make sure you can at least get your dad's support and have him co-sign a loan (if you're getting one) b/c he can get you low interest rates, and hey, that's another good thing, you'll build up a good credit line. Sorry for the long post

Exactly, my old man's car history is deff that of strong cars, GTOs, transams, several porches and several bmws. But, I never got into the argument with my rents. I just came home one day, and said I found a car, and I am getting it, then I kindly asked my dad to co-sign because my credit is too new and I wanted to finance the car.

I too was in your situation. when I was 16 my mom handed me down her VW Scrocco (sic) which was a cool car but I didnt want it. So anyway one day I took it upon my self to destroy it kinda. I faked it. I got a bunch of metal shavings from someplace and then dumped them in the bottom of my oil change pan. Volia!! I called my dad to the garage and showed him all the metal shavings in the bottom of the pan and told him the engine is fixing to let go in a big way and I did not feel safe drivng it. He took it hook line and sinker. He had bought my mom a ZR-1 Vette like a week before I pulled this stunt , I went w/ them to buy the vette, they were gonna get a regular C4 w/ the auto tranny. I pleadedw/him to get the limited edition cuz it would be worth more, in reality I knew my mom would never have the patience to drive a stick. long story short I got the ZR-1 the same day the VW started cough cough cough having its little problem.

hey guys i appreciate all the advice. my father has many sports cars in the past including two porsches, so i am sure i can win that argument with him. I think the best bet for me would be to just work my a$$ off like a couple people have recomended and just buy the BMW on my own, then they cant really say anything about it. I was hoping that my dad would let me have some of the money for the expedition if i sold it, but who knows where that would go with him. but who knows, i think i will wait til the end of summer so i can just say to my dad, here i saved up a crap load of money and i want to put it donw on a BMW. He knows that i have wanted a BMW every since i made himn go out and look at his 740iL. ANd two bmw's later i want one of my own. anyways, i will use everything you all said in my argument and i will let you know how it comes out. thanks again for all teh help, you guys are awesome.

Good luck...hard work sucks, but it's so worth it for a car that you'll love. Think of it this way...one of your buddies always has to jump on the ugly girl out of the group so that the rest of you can have fun (you are the unlucky friend that takes it so your right foot will have a good time) .
