Climate control trouble

I have a 1997 M3 63k miles, with some climate control problems. The display will fade or go black while im driving and then sometimes come back on after a couple minutes. Its really annoying since i cant control it while it is dim/dark. Any ideas before I take it to the dealership?

If the rest of the unit is cutting out, (on/off as if somethinng was shorting or was loose)I would suggest this:

I just had the same problem with my car, the dealer said it is common for any 3 series, i had to replace my climate control unit, but i bought one from a service place that specializes in BMW's, saved me around $200 from the dealers price...

Thanks for the fast response guys. Its good to know that its something simple. Im gonna try the self fix first and if that fails go get a new computer.



Oh btw, i just ordered the bentley service manual, know if its a good book for do it yourself repairs?

Finally got around to replacing the cap. So far so good. I worked fine on the drive home so Im guessing itll be fine now. Thank for the help guys.
