    Painting trim?

I think it is dark_sirius' car that has the side moldings painted to match his car. My car is cosmos black, so they don't stand out that much, but i still don't like them. They are faded in spots. I got to looking at them the other day, and was wondering if i should paint them black to match my car, or the same silver that is on the wheels? I also considered painting the front grils silver instead of blacking them out. Do you think that if i had the grill and side moldings silver to match the wheels would look r i c e? I think the black/silver theme would look pretty sharp.

I'm going to paint the moldings to match my silver M...but dont paint them silver to match the wheels on the black car...that wouldnt look right. If you're going to paint them...get them a shiny black and it'll look slick.

You do realize the PURPOSE of the mouldings, right? They are designed to take door dings, bumps, etc. etc... if you paint them you will no longer have the ability to hide those dings, etc.

That's why you park out in the middle of nowhere in the parking lots! Gets a little more exercise walking to/from the car...and saves the dings!

Yes, paint them. Looks so slick. Only if they are painted to match, I think the silver look would throw off the balace of the car....

I agree with you... I just wish that wax didn't stick to them forever

If you had a lighter color car I'd say paint em...but it's a real toss up with cosmos, I'd keep them the same as they are. Black-out your grills with semi-flat black and it will match the mouldings real well and look damn good.

I didn't think anyone would like that idea. One of my friends that drives a honda told me thats what I need to do. The reason I mainly wanted to paint them was because of the wax, and some faded areas also. If I do paint them cosmos, I'm going to paint the grills cosmos too, instead of flat black. Just to be different. Could any major body shop be able to order me some BMW paint?

We use PPG paint at our shop, which is not factory BMW paint. I believe glazuret (spelling is wrong, sue me) is factory for BMW. You can go to almost any good paint distribitor, give them your color code, and they should be able to whip you up a batch, dunno how much though.

For the side moldings it's a no brainer.....do NOT paint silver but I'm all for painting them black.

About blackening the grill.. uhmmmm since you have a black car I don't know (I also have black), somehow the black on black doesn't work for me.

I posted some pics to help you decide.

dark sirius: I have a 97 AW and am considering having my moulding painted to match. I have a couple of questions for you, if you don't mind....

1). Can the molding be painted in place and not look like crap? If so, how much could I expect to pay?

2). I would guess the prefered method is to pull the trim. How much could I expect to pay and is it worth the extra, in your opinion?

                            Thank you for your input....

Take them off to get them painted. Works better, besides, they just pop off anyways. Depends on where you get the work done on how much you'll pay, depedons on labor rate. We charge around like 250 for all the mouldings, possibly more, its been awhile.

2). I would guess the prefered method is to pull the trim. How much could I expect to pay and is it worth the extra, in your opinion?

                              Read above.

We won't guarantee the paint work on mouldings at our shop though, but I have yet to see a comeback for them. The primary reason is this, durring manufacturing of the mouldins, companies use chemicals called release agents. Consider them 'pam' for plastic. These chemicals prevent the moulding from sticking to the mould they are being created from. These chemicals sometimes stay in the actual moulding, and this could affect the adheasion on the paint. The other reason is that the mouldings are textured, which can also affect paint adheasion.

Me personally, I havent had one issue with mine.. so *shrug*
