    Grinding from 1st to 2nd

When I am on it hard (shift gears right before redline) from 1st to 2nd, I get a grinding noise. This only happens from 1st to 2nd, and I know that the clutch pedal is to the floor. I think that it may be my synchros (according to a friend). What exactly are synchros and are they something that I would get repaired or need to be totally replaced? How much would it set me back?

*grins* Yep, too lazy to type that all out.

Bascialy, if your sycros are slipping, ie, they arn't grabbing the gear like they should, they won't match the teeth of the gear speed wise, and you'll end up knocking teeth together when you put it in gear, instead of slipping them into the gear.

I see, thanks. Being an area of friction, it is feasable that the synchro to place the transmission in 2nd gear can wear down. So, do you have any idea how much to replace the synchro before I have to buy something real expensive like a gear.

Well, I can tell you for a fact, BMW won't replace your sycs. BMW is very picky about techs ripping apart their transmissions, and they rather just replace the entire tranny. However, a transmission shop may do it. But I dunno, them are complicated things.

I was going to buy a 6-spd euro tranny a few months back to hold onto for a while until I could get the conversion done. It had bad synchros from 1st to 2nd - a place quoted me somewhere in the neighborhood of 300-500 bucks to fix, but with that number you have to remember the tranny was already pulled so... Just for your info.

Also BMW will not open the tranny - my car is in the shop right now for the 5th gear issue & was told they will not open it up for any reason. You could find a tranny place to work on it though, its not a difficult fix and any competent shop that works on german autos should be familiar w/ the ZF tranny.

Please tell me more about the Euro 6 speed transmission. Is there a model number, how much are they, where do I get one. I would love to have a 6th gear.

When my car is in 2nd, if you move the knob anywhere than where it automaticly centers itself, you feel a pretty harsh vibration. It only does this in 2nd? What is grinding?

I believe the 6-spd tranny is anywhere btwn 3-4 thousand. Search google, ebay, bimmerforums, etc... They are around every once and a while, or you can order one from overseas and ship it over. Not sure of the part # or anything else as I didn't buy it, of course it went for 1000 on ebay so I'm kicking myself.
