i think it would fit cause i heard that BMW rims aren't that wide for the tire sizes they have, but i would hold off for the 235's. Unless you are getting them dirt cheap, i would wait. You could just buy some cheaper tires in a 235 and that would probably be better off then going to smaller width tires.

The listed size for any given tire is only a rough guide as to fitment. Two 225/40/18 tires from two manufacturers, or even between two models from the same manufacturer, may not actually be the same diameter nor the same tread width. If you go to tirerack.com you can check the actual dimensions for any given tire that they sell, eg a 225/40/18 S-03 has exactly the same tread width as a 235/40/17 AVS Sport.

a little off topic, but i am getting some 18x8.5s all around with 225/40/18..some friends say that these tires will be too small and stretch a little, is this true, if so, i need some advice with different sizes.. note: my car is lowered some.
i have 8.5 J 18" as well and on the front 225/40R18 andt they are stretch a little 255/35R18 on the rear is looking much better (i it not much stretcht  but just a littel but i think 225 looks better on 8J
maby next time i will put 235/40R18 on the front

what kind of tires? I had a set of Pirelli suspersports on an 18x8.5 and those were stretched a bit. I have replaced them with S03s - and those look like they belong on an 8.5 wide rim. both sets were 225/40/18.
