Hi all,
I am looking at purchasing a 1994-97 M3 in Canada - am currently finishing up grad school and feel like rewarding myself once I get that darn thesis out of the way!
Anyways, I am completely new to BMW. I have searched several of the M3-related forums and read the excellent FAQ from Eurospeed, and have noted the potential problems mentioned - water pump, radiator, RTABS, etc., as well as the differences between 1995 and later motels (OBD I vs OBD II). I am still having some difficulty in synthesizing all of this information into a buying decision though!
So, I would appreciate specific recommendations on the following. The cars I have seen advertised that would fit my budget are:
- 1994 Euro-spec w/ 50,000 miles
- 1995 w/ 50,000 miles
- 1997 w/ 25,000 miles
The '97 would be a stretch, but maybe worthwhile w/ lower mileage ? I gather the '95 would be easier to mod, but I am not really interested in mods - stock would be just fine with me.
I am a novice home mechanic (mechanically inclined, mech. eng. degree, not a lot of experience though), would be using the car frequently (daily driver in summer) but not intensely (no track time). From what I have read, the car is pretty solid as long as preventive maintenance is taken care of. The only thing that really scares me is the potential for a massive bill at some point for a catastrophic failure e.g. $10K, as my income would be hard-pressed to handle that for the next 2-3 years until I get established. I am thus looking for suggestions on which of the above might be most appropriate for me.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and thanks to all moderators and members for posting such excellent information!
Cheers,
Hal
