Someone said that they loved the simplicity of macs...They aren't very simple, they are just made for simple people. The main difference between Mac and PC is their architecture...Macs use RISC and PCs use CISC. RISC is more efficient, however CISC has been around longer and production of CISC chips processors has been perfected. Most CISC processors now actually work more like a RISC ones, like AMDs products. Macs are for simple people...they are very popular among the elderly and childeren who dont want to understand or customize, they just want to be able to get their email. Many Macs are sealed up and their cases are not meant to be opened, so it is very hard to upgrade and customize them. Just like all of us who customize and fine tune our M3s...you can do the same with a PC. A MAC is more like a minivan with a sealed hood, you are not meant to fiddle with what makes it work.

Macs are typically overpriced for what you get, a equally capable PC will almost always run $300 cheaper that its Mac equivilent. However PCs are more power hunger (use 3 tiems the power of a Mac) and give off lots of heat.

Anyway, I will not step foot in a Mac store personally, Just like i wont step into a gay bar. Mac puts a large emphasis on making their computers look like they were designed by richard simmons after having one too many Zimas. But some people are into that. I prefer functionallity over gay looks.

So which is better? it depends on who you are, if you are a stupid homosexual...buy a mac (meant to be in a humorous tone).

Everyone has their opinions and this debate has gone on forever, and many different conclusions have been made...most people agree on one thing though, linux is better than both.

A little something on MACs (http://www.ubergeek.tv/article.php?pid=55)

Would be a lot more fun if you guys actually knew more about the Macintosh.

      Van with a sealed hood,

      http://www.apple.com/powermac/design.html

A short list of simple people,

      http://entropy.freeservers.com/macuser.html

Who's more simple, the content producer making a movie or creating a song, student creating a report, elderly woman looking at digital photos of her grandchildren 1500 miles away or the guy tinkering with his PC trying to get a better frame rate for his game?

The reason more people don't use Macintoshes is the same lemming mentality that puts a whole lot more Chevys and Fords on the road than BMWs and Audis. Wider availability, cheaper prices, noisier ads.

And what's up with the homophobia? I'm not gay nor do I know any gay Mac users. It certainly wouldn't bother me though. I don't see the relationship between computer platform and sexual orientation. A lot of thought goes into the look and feel of the Macintosh. A lot of thought went into the way your car looks and feels as well, and that includes the dealerships in which they are sold. Beauty isn't the exclusive property of homosexuals.

Also, it's always been humorous to me how quickly PC zealots will start talking about Linux being the greatest thing after throwing out the tired, old "there isn't any software for the Mac" myth.

      http://guide.apple.com/ussoftware.lasso

Enjoy whatever platform you choose, for whatever reasons you chose it. And enjoy your M3 and your sexual relationships. Just don't look down your nose at the next guy's choices unless you have a well formulated opinion of why his choice was inferior. It's a big, interesting world. Let's hope it stays that way.

I have an ipod hardwired into my M3. It's very simple. You need a cable that connects to the CD changer or AUX input on the back of your head unit. I happen to have an Alpine, and as such bought a cable specific to alpine. I am pretty sure someone makes one that works with the stock BMW HU. This cable basically converts the CD changer input into remale RCA cords with which you can attach an RCA to 8th inch cord (easily bought at radio shark for about $5 or a monster cable version for around $20). Then it's as easy as plugging the "8th" end of the cord (this is the headphone jack side) into the ipod and the RCA pins into the female RCA jacks on the other cable.

Many of my friends have gone the FM modulator route and all agree that the hardwire is the best way to go for continued quality.

I don't want to get off topic too much but as far as the PC v. Mac debate goes it's all a matter of personal preference. I have used a mac for 15 years and I have never felt a need to change to a PC. Why? Well, as some have already mentioned, I enjoy the 'no hassle' associated with Macs. I have quite enough stress already and I don't need a computer to stress me out anymore. And about the 'gay' design; (come on, I thought this board was more mature) I come from a family of designers and to me design IS very important. I honestly don't want a gray box sitting on my desk, but I'll gladly throw a G4 Cube with flat pannel on there. Are there some things that PCs do better? Sure. But there are some things that Macs to better especially with OSX. You guys should try em out!

As an aside, a diehard "Mac hater" friend of mine receintly got into music editing. My one time "I will never use a mac" friend now has a G4 powerbook and a G5 tower. I think the PC got bumped to the garage.

A textbook Mac user...the kind that give Mac a bad name. As i mentioned already, there is not much use in arguing over this issue, especially with someone who obviously knows nothing about how a computer actually works. I find your post hilarious because my final conclusion did not say either one was inferior...plus i have heard nothing about the true differences on the two computers from you, only general comments such as "no worms no viruses" and some list of a bunch of actors and random people who use them hahaha (where did you dig up that gem of knowledge)...do you really these are good supporting facts on why Macs are so wonderful :???: Although I guess this is a car forum and not a computer furum so this level of knowledge should be expected. What im trying to say is, dont argue on something that you obviously don't know anything about, and dont be so defensive. I'm not a PC zealot, i work mostly on a sun with a solaris operating system.

"Who's more simple, the content producer making a movie or creating a song, student creating a report, elderly woman looking at digital photos of her grandchildren 1500 miles away or the guy tinkering with his PC trying to get a better frame rate for his game?"

hahahaha...shieet that must be the only thing that PC users do! I didn't know that "creating a report" and "looking at digital photos" was such a complicated thing to do (maybe with a Mac...hahaha I'm kidding...). I think most users can handle that buddy.

"Beauty isn't the exclusive property of homosexuals."

So you are admitting to them having gay styling? That was "meant to be in a humorous tone", I'm pretty sure you know what that means (I'm joking).

If you are really interested in computers, you should take a community college course in computer architecture or something and begin to actually learn about computers and stop this childish Mac groupie behavior.

          Amused,

          matt

I was probably in a computer course when you were learning your ABCs. That's the beauty of the Macintosh, we don't have to know how they work or what makes them tick. We just do things with them. Those "things" become much more important than the computer itself. That's all most people want to do. Do you want hot food or do you want to know how a microwave oven works? I'll just take the hot food, thanks.

Three people at my work have bought Macs since Christmas (we run a water plant) simply because they purchased digital cameras for the holidays and couldn't get pictures into their PCs. I plugged their cameras into my PowerBook and without software or drivers, iPhoto automatically opened and boom, pictures. It's a simple thing, but it wasn't working that way on their PCs. They wanted the pictures, not a computer lesson. These are skilled, intelligent people, just not computer literate. The personal computer is about 25 years old now, should they still have to be computer literate? So no "buddy", I would have to say "most" people can't just "handle" it.

Most people, at least the ones I know, are interested in what a computer can do, not the computer itself. Does Michael Shumacher need to know the differences between a Lysolm and a Roots supercharger to be a good driver? I don't think so.

            Bored and amused,

            Todd

hahaha...its fine with me if you are satisfied with simply the end product...i prefer to know how the end product is reached. Your ignorance kind of makes this hard to argue...maybe i can lay it out very simply for you. People will always find instances where Macs or PCs or any operating system/computer has failed. So by relating you little anecdotes about Macs, you are proving nothing, its childish, dont do it. By doing so you make yourself look very stupid...can you follow me so far? The only way you can truly tell which is better is by systematic testing of both systems. This has been done by both Mac lovers and PC lovers and the results are always different because there are many different variables to take into account (mainly what the computer is being used for). This requires an understanding of how a computer actually works (which you've confessed to not having). So, no one (especially you) can really say which is better, Macs or PCs as I said in the first place, although everybody has a preference. Try to understand, and know when to give up.

Yikes. This thread seems to have taken on a life of its own. In an effort to respond to the original query that started this all, I currently listen to my iPod in the car via FM Modulation (iTrip). That of course sucks and I've been searching for a more elegant solution to the problem.

I found a site today that offers what appears to be a solution that interfaces the iPod to your factory HU via the existing CD changer pre-wiring. The manufacturer (or marketer) is Dension and the product is called ICELink v1.1. You can check it out at http://www.densionusa.com/x/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=375&Itemid=7 9. The solution is about $500 total (15 GB iPod for $299 plus ICELink for $200) which offers some savings when compared to like devices such as the Phatnoise.

I'd really like to know if anyone out there has experience with this product, or if I'll be the lucky one to try it out first and report back to the group. Please let me know.
