Pre Amp only means that you have to have an external amp to power the stereo. You will not have any speaker line comming out of the stereo, just RCAs for the AMP.

Now as to the question could u use a 7998 with the factory amp.... I don't think that u could. because the stereo only has RCA on the back of it, and the factory amp needs speaker wires for the input.

A bit of stereo information. Most and I do mean about all of them, are all comming out with silver trim. SILVER trim in a beautiful BMW, No way would I want that in my car. So I opted for the 7998 wich is Alpines best modle for last year.... It is in black trim, with amber colors that match really well at night. I got mine of 490 with warranty from a store here in town. They originally sold for 800+ last year

      Hi, Dakhar,

Thanks for the reply. So the problem for using it with a factory amp is pure connector issue (not signal/power level issue) right?

If so can I get an adaptor to convert RCA to speaker wires (no signal processing, just rewiring inside the adaptor) and then connect the head unit to factory amp? Any danger in doing this?

So I assume you went all out and upgraded to aftermarket amp in order to use 7998?

Your vent was not bent by a screw driver, its a common problem with our cars. It starts to seperate at the top of the vent. Look at your drivers side vent and you will probably see it starting to bend up as well.

BMW has a kit that is suppsed to shore it back up, but it is a pain to install and doesn't really do any good.

          Erliban,

I am not sure if you could conver RCA to wires in order to use your stock AMP. I have seen others on the forum use speaker wires straight off of there after market stereo directly into the factory amp... aparently no big deal.... But I did not see this on the forum before I dropped a ton of money down on the table...

So I replaced everything.... My oops, but no regrets

OK, I finally got my new 7998 and started to install it. When I pulled off the stock head unit, on the back of the unit there is the antenna plug, the BMW wiring harness and another single wire plugged to a single end on the unit marked "AMP" (kind of a silver color metal connector).

I'm guessing that is the AMP remote turn-on? But shouldn't the remote turn on be one of the wires in the big black wiring harness? Can somebody help please? Thanks.

i use the CD43 out of a newer Z3/M coupe/M roadster. much better unit than stock, matches perfectly, gives me a CD player in front, controls the stock changer, and install takes about 5 minutes.

i'm working on a way to do a pop out 17" crt display. will post pictures when i'm done.

You would think it would be part of the main harness but I don't think it is in the HK setup. I do think that's remote power on for your HK amp.

You have to wire the remote turn on from the HU to the remote turn on in the harness. I believe its blue wire...

Here. In the pic, the remote turn on for my alpine is spliced from the soild blue wire from the factory harness, to the remote turn on from the HU. This is so the amp in the back of the car turns on all the time. Instead of with select functinos.

This is an older pic.. I may have to go double check that :P

Yes, I had to use the remote turn on on the main wiring harness.

However, I now have this dangling wire that I asked about (the one marked "AMP" with a metal tip). I have attached a picture of the connector (I cut it off). Anyway, it seems to function correctly even though I did not connect that wire.

aftermarket head units in an E36 look out of place.

unless the appearance drastically changes, i wont be replacing my factory HE.

i have the nakamichi and it blends really well - this is the one as close as stock looking as you can get.

BTW what do i get for the antenna? what adapter?

Looks don't matter to me. Sound quality does. Factory units lack in good sound quality. The alpine I stuffed in my car makes the factory HK's sound 110% better than what the factory HU produces....

I have to say, the Nakamichi does blend well and there are a lot of older Blaupunkts that would drop in a BMW and look like a factory install.... Now the Alpine 7998, when in closed position looks very good, and at night the amber illumination matches perfectly

I picked the 9827 cause I like blue/silver. In fact, I love it heh. The odd color dosen't bother me in the least bit.
